Let’s be clear: the National Guard troops, federal law enforcement, and D.C. police cannot violate the Constitution or the D.C. Home Rule Act.

Understanding your rights can help you make the best decision for yourself if approached by law enforcement.
Judge Jia M. Cobb’s ruling yesterday to halt the president's deployment of National Guard troops to the District is just the start of restoring the power over D.C. where it belongs: with the people.

We will continue to fight for D.C. and we will continue to fight for democracy.

Today, U.S. District Judge Jia M. Cobb ordered a halt to the president’s unlawful deployment of National Guard troops to D.C.

This ruling provides an important check on presidential power and makes it clear that when we defend D.C., we defend democracy.

Trans people are 4x as likely to experience violence as their cisgender peers. That's why we work each day to build strong communities, safe schools, and equitable healthcare, and to ensure no one's safety or dignity is taken for granted.

Remember: our freedoms are intertwined.

Without federal accountability, federal officers can act in aggressive and dangerous ways that put all our fundamental rights and safety at risk. Everyone deserves the right to hold officers accountable and receive compensation for harms caused.

It’s nearly impossible for normal Americans to sue the government. Not so for U.S. senators
The House unanimously passed a repeal of the controversial provision. But Senate action is unclear.

This Transgender Day of Remembrance, we mourn the trans lives lost to violence. We commit to building a just and free D.C. where nobody has to live in fear just because of who they are, and we won't stop fighting until trans people are free to live in joy, abundance, and safety.

The ACLU-D.C. will continue to fight for all children held in DYRS custody to promptly get the rehabilitative placements they need, and this fight includes working to ensure they are not held at a condemned facility. 1/2
Seems like DYRS is turning to a shuttered juvenile detention facility in Maryland to help address capacity issues at YSC...and @aclu-dc.bsky.social is not happy about it. Lawmakers have been raising alarms about the persistent rise in the youth jail's population these last few years.

As our E.D. Monica Hopkins notes: what's very clear from the ground in Trump’s unprecedented siege of D.C. is that people and organizations in every state, city, town, and territory must prepare to answer this pressing call to defend democracy.

Embodying public service, Deb Haaland has dedicated her career to building a more just and sustainable world. She's the very definition of a trailblazer—becoming the first Native American woman to lead a State Party, serve in Congress, and serve as a cabinet secretary.

The existence of trans people isn't new—but there is a new,
outsized focus on scapegoating trans people to spread fear and anxiety.

Let's be clear: trans liberation is tied to all of our freedoms. We’re fighting for a world where trans people can be who they are without apology.

Alice Wong dedicated her life to championing disability rights and building a more just and inclusive world. Her legacy will forever be an inspiration as we continue fighting for freedom, liberty, and justice for all in D.C.

Thank you, Alice. May you rest in peace and joy. 🕊️

This Transgender Awareness Week is a great opportunity to remind everyone: transgender people have always existed, period.

We will continue to fight for equal treatment and equal rights for transgender people in D.C. so that they may thrive, not just survive.

The law might have tolerated government conduct of this sort a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. But in the here and now, the government doesn't get to decide if your protest is funny, and the government officials can’t punish you for making them the punchline.

President Trump's deployment of armed National Guard troops to D.C. doesn't make us safer. This blatant power grab is about creating fear and further eroding our democracy.

Let's be clear: if troops or federal agents violate our rights, they must be held accountable.

Our military relies on public trust that service members will uphold the Constitution and the rule of law, regardless of personal loyalties or political opinions. President Trump's deployment of troops to police civilians in D.C. and other major U.S. cities undermines that trust.

The ACLU has long defended and advanced the civil liberties of veterans and servicemembers. As far as we've come, there's still work to do.

This Supreme Court decision not only undermines the ACLU's ongoing lawsuit against the Trump admin.'s discriminatory policy, it also undermines transgender people's freedom to have their government documents reflect their identity.

Transgender people deserve equal treatment and equal dignity, too.
BREAKING: The Supreme Court will allow the Trump administration to enforce its anti-trans and anti-nonbinary passport policy during litigation.

The unsigned, four-paragraph order effectively reverses two lower-court decisions. The Democratic appointees dissent.
