In short, the problem here is not that Signal ‘chose’ to run on AWS. The problem is the concentration of power in the infrastructure space that means there isn’t really another choice: the entire stack, practically speaking, is owned by 3-4 players. 11/

I wrote a cross-platform CLAP plug-in test host in < 2000 lines of code with no libraries (other than CLAP + system libs). If that is not a testament to how simple and straightforward the CLAP API is idk what is.
Here is it playing a sine wave through Pro-Q 4, ST4b, and the MiniMeters plug-ins.

In this vein, getting a NAS/DAS or external HDD/SSD is lowkey a huge move
The price of hardware for digital storage has dramatically dropped over the past decade, and there has never been a better time to start that music/movie collection

i'm begging u all to start a digital/physical media collection. buy a cheap cd/cassette/vinyl player from the thrift shop. get acquainted with bandcamp when u can buy music and soulseek when u can't. there are thousands of free shows and movies on archive.org that don't involve navigating viruses.

sit down and REALLY intentionally listen to that album you're interested in. sit down and watch a few episodes of season 1 of that series you were interested in. or, better yet, watch those episodes once a week. buy some DVDs from the thrift shop and work your way through them. you'll like it.
don't allow corporations and algorithms to dictate what you do and don't like. you need to get more comfortable owning things on your terms and not just renting licenses for everything in your life. buy a cheap 1tb external hdd on sale and go wild. capitalists hate it and you'll be more free.
