Not too bad! A little fiddly to move around because of the lack of magnets, but it has potential…

Stop the presses, I've found the only Complication I'll ever need to take in Draw Steel.

I was watching Tetris (2024) last night, and beheld the universe once again validating @anna-belle.bsky.social.

After the round one of the players came up to me and said, “Hey… heard you were looking for these…”

And handed me this:

And lastly I’ve got Night’s Black Agents: Solo Ops.

During the early days of the pandemic I was checking out a lot of duet games to play with friends online. This is the duet version of Night’s Black Agents, a GUMSHOE game about secret agents hunting draculas, as one does. Spy thriller vampire fun!

I WILL run Alternity before I die. I have a core memory of reading this game in a hotel during either middle or high school, as we went on vacation shortly after I acquired it. The artwork and the main campaign setting are phenomenal and evocative. Truly it was like discovering RPGs all over again.

I found my copy of Sword World! I think it’s first edition rather than 2.0. I picked this up at a Yellow Submarine in either Hiroshima or Tokyo back in 2003, I think. It’s entirely in Japanese, and there is very little artwork inside. I need to get back on the horse with Japanese to decipher it.

Coming back to these as I realize I never finished them off. Promethean: The Created! One of the nWoD/Chronicles of Darkness books that didn’t have a direct oWoD analog, you essentially play a Frankenstein’s monster or Galatea-style character seeking to alchemically gain life and a soul.

Arianrhod RPG, by Takeshi Kikuichi and F.E.A.R.

I can’t find my copy of Sword World 2.0, but I have another Japanese TTRPG in Japanese! Picked these up when I was studying in Hiroshima back in 2003. It’s inspired by Final Fantasy XI and has class combos and party skills. The right book is a replay.

Beam Saber, by Austin Ramsay. I had to handle this one with care—since Austin came out a while back that now makes it official that Beam Saber transed the gender of everyone in the original playtest group, myself included.

Forged in the Dark, giant robots, giant feelings, war crimes.

i’m sorry did you say street magic, by Caro Asercion.

This is a city-building game that uses a lot of index cards. Each turn players pick out a theme and expand the city with places and people based on the chosen theme.

But everyone is a coward since I’ve yet to find anyone to play this with.

Dragon Storm, by Black Dragon Press. Despite its look, it is an RPG with dice and stuff. The cards are used to build characters and encounters, but were distributed randomly. There are no card-drawing mechanics in the game at all.

Picked up a few boxes earlier this year on the cheap.

Dragonlance: Fifth Age! My collection nears completion, but this is the main box I’ve had since high school. More story-focused for its era than AD&D, with a deck of cards for resolution and character creation.

It didn’t do well, it has its flaws, but it has a special place in my heart.

Made some Proclamations for the Pool of Radiance game I want to use Tales of the Valiant to run. I did lift some text directly from the Adventurer's Journal from the video game.

No, Tales of the Valiant, I don't think I will...
June 29, 2025 at 7:46 PM
I made this list to sort out the “flow” of the missions in Pool of Radiance.

If I did milestone leveling, that puts them at 9th level assuming I give them a level every mission. And this doesn’t account for side missions.

The text supports my argument.

It’s weird to say I have a favorite annotation, but this one has been burned into my memory since I first read it in the early 2000s. I like to share it with friends whenever the subject of Dragonlance comes up. I have been waiting to come across it again to share it with all of you.

A story that writes itself.

The companions are fighting Khisanth at Xak Tsaroth and we discover the needs of an RPG and the needs of a novel are very different in this hilarious anecdote from Margaret Weis.
June 17, 2025 at 7:20 AM
WotC corporate take note.
June 17, 2025 at 4:32 AM
The annotations are pretty good and frequent, like these about Raistlin’s eyes from both Tracy Hickman (TRH) and Margaret Weis (MW). There are also annotations from Michael Williams who wrote the songs and poetry, Jeff Grubb, and Jean Blashfield Black.

WRONG, SUCKER! Book One contains all of the rules AND setting info, and Book Two contains… AN ADVENTURE! The Rising Storm, Part One of Dragons of a New Age—which will be an ongoing adventure throughout the first four expansions.

Gone is the trim! Gone is the cute pamphlet! Now it is hidden!
