🚜 Britain’s farming sector is in crisis.

Global over-production keeps commodity prices down, and state support that once propped up private farms has largely disappeared.

The solution lies in commoning agriculture. 1/2

We used to own our essential services, like water, energy, and transport. Not anymore.

This week @kmilb.bsky.social, co-director of @abundance-org.bsky.social, joined the New Economics Podcast to talk Radical Abundance: how to win a green democratic economy.

We live in a world where we have too much of what we don't need and too little of what we do – but it doesn't have to be this way.

To meet biodiversity and climate targets, we need a transition towards agroecological food production in Britain.

But how?

Here @adamvaughan.bsky.social shows why we need social control of water.

Out yesterday, our report makes the case for treating water as a shared resource, not a corporate asset.

It asks "should we prioritise using water to grow food or to cool data centres?"

How much water do Britain's data centres use?

Bafflingly, there is no official figure. So here's my best estimate after weeks of reporting: circa 10 billion litres of water a year. And that's before any big UK AI boom.

The tech industry faces scrutiny as secrecy clouds the true cost of cooling servers and the country braces for shortages and hosepipe bans

1/3 One of the best and most refined arguments out there for water in public hands. Worth the read.

Water should work for us but is really run to make rich people richer. Yet "nationalisation" isn't always the answer.

3/3 That's why, more than nationalisation, we need democratic ownership and control of our water.

Abundance’s new paper says it’s not just about who owns things. It’s about who controls them - and how to make sure that’s us, the public.

England's broken water system needs a change of ownership.

Keir Milburn & Bertie Russell argue for @abundance-org.bsky.social that we need more than that: a new model built around social control of water, prioritising & empowering workers & communities.

New report from myself and @kmilb.bsky.social for @abundance-org.bsky.social on the need for social control of water.

A contribution thinking about the future of Thames Water, and what we shoulf be organising for.
Thames Water might soon be brought into a Special Administration Regime, but public ownership alone won’t fix a system rigged for private profit.

Without real social control, we risk repeating the same mistakes.

A report out today from @bertrussell.bsky.social and I for @abundance-org.bsky.social advocating for social control of the failed privatised water companies via democratic governance.

We look at, and learn the lessons from, four different attempts to reorganise water services along these lines.
