the most unworkable & out of touch is the idea that unions will fund some third-party system. please. We have less than 10% of the workforce. Our duty is to represent our members and organize new ones. We operate politically in a 2 party system and cannot afford to have everyone hate us. Why us?!

I work in a labor union and I didn't love this interview but I think this is an overstament (its social media, I know) but in my experience with our members, an authentic working class voice and appearance is critical because we VASTLY underestimate how little information penetrates. sad but true

unless it comes from the vichy region of France its just plain sparkling terrorism.

It also misses the really important marriage of labor and climate activists that was Biden greatest victory. Which sucks cause it means this of us in labor who care are just mourning alone. No one seems to remember that a wedge in the left was removed through good hard work.

i worked many retail jobs over the years, but never mom and pop. always big chains with lots of insurance. I decided case by case who I let shoplift and what. kid stealing branded fancy clothes (versace, avirex, gaultier)- yes. middle aged white person stealing unbranded luxury (armani etc) nope.

More interested in being right than being constructive. These are people who never show up irl, complain about the union but don’t go to meetings

i just happen to be reading this, for obvious reasons. the reasons why tyrants rise and how they sustain themselves was the subject of many of Shakespeare's plays and they are depressingly relevant. www.goodreads.com/book/show/41...

it is the defining characteristic of tyranny that the ruler is unwanted. tyrants, as you point out, can stay in power for quite a long time, hated by everyone, including the terrified people who assist them.

True. But there is something about ripping the illusions away. This is what they want and he wants it for them.

not talking about the aesthetics of pornography! that IS nearly the entirety, or at least the root and fullest expression! but then the word I use is idolatrous. old old messy word. but for me the American aesthetic is , like, the simulacra making project of idolatry. any recommendations?

i went to college a billion years ago but I remember my desire to engage aesthetics in my philosophy minor was not met with great enthusiasm from profs or students. it was like wanting to study astrology or the balance of the humors.

US alienation from even unserious thinking about aesthetics is CRAZY: the profound ugliness of the built environment, the drab baggy uniform, the tasteless foods, the scentless flowers. and now AI slop pre-chewing it all. Has there been a resurgence of interest in aesthetics in the academy?

I think of this story of excessive humility, invisible blemishes and the destruction of the temple a lot these days. Replace the chief rabbi with every centrist. rabbi360.com/2024/08/11/d...
Destruction and Conflict: Then and Now (for Tisha B’Av)
In a few days, the Jewish community will mark Tisha B’Av (“the ninth of Av”), a day on our calendar of mourning and commemoration. The historic events at the center of the observance is the destruc…

As culture never stops changing, however, these people are creating the cultural sense. Then the question becomes - is this the culture that makes sense for you? Because there is an outfit that drapes well: drapey, high waist, natural fabric and even a hat? Klan robes. It’s a joke but…
