mostly a linuxposter, sometimes arguing with people over stupid things they said

she/they/it (dont be weird and we're chill)
my mother's not a very technical person, and she's in her mid 60s now. when her laptop couldn't run windows 11, she asked me to put linux on it - and she's been very pleased with mint cinnamon. i hope you will be too =]

i daily drove linux mint for most of a year when i switched to linux. to this day, i think it's one of the best linux distributions for beginners, and in my experience, if you can get past installing it, using it will be a breeze! good luck with whatever distro you choose :)

there are plenty of linux users here on bluesky and across the internet who would be happy to help you decide whether linux is right for you! if you have discord, i tend to recommend allthingslinux.org, they have a community full of linux experts who are happy to help beginners decide

i've used several init systems and never noticed any appreciable difference in battery life - for me it's always been what GUI apps you're running, not the base system 🤷‍♀️

as a linux user of 2 years: may your early trials be smooth and your bugs be few! i had trouble with a lot of things at first, but now i can't imagine going back. you really start feeling free and in control in ways you never have when you get comfortable with linux!

weird, i just installed debian from cd-rom last week and don't remember it doing that... maybe it doesn't happen on the net installer (default download option)?

that definitely shouldn't be the case. what's your hardware setup?

congrats to you! i started on mint when i switched to linux. i hope you keep enjoying it as much as i did!

good luck! as an arch linux user i know it can be tricky getting linux to work sometimes and we aren't always the nicest community when you need support, but there are a lot of great people. may your install be smooth and your bugs be few!

i believe you can even buy a thinkpad or some dell models from the company's website with ubuntu preinstalled. worth considering if you can't get your hands on a dedicated linux laptop (i haven't been able to yet)!

wishing you good luck with this! dedicated linux-exclusive laptops like system76's offerings can be hard to buy with their low production rates and limited distribution, but lenovo (thinkpad, legion) and dell make laptops with surprisingly good linux support for a major company. (1/2)

sad but unsurprising - i got lucky when i switched to be on a radeon gpu for budget reasons. fingers crossed for you and so many other people with official, open source nvidia drivers on the horizon!
