I'm guessing, I've never really searched here I don't think,
But this seems unlikely.

It's like cheap TV's that are loaded with ad's. It's makes sense that it could help drop the cost of a device but when it becomes the norm it's fucking obnoxious. Thankfully - people didn't seem to have as much tolerance for it on phones so it's really only on the lowest $ devices.

A little deeper the laws are being in-forced in a way that the routing should not matter. So if there was a real concern or not; it's not a thing. And in hindsight, yeah it wouldn't make sense for all of AT&T to have a Mississippi IP address so of course it wouldn't affect the whole carrier.

And this is why researching what you hear is good. I am in-fact wrong. I think what I heard was a miss understanding of how the new social medial laws in Mississippi will effect carriers because I guess AT&T has all or a significant portion of it's traffic routed through there. But digging...

I have no specific feelings one way or the other but I do hate the state internet laws reducing internet freedom- and low key love that it exposed AT&T for having a single point of failure in their network
September 6, 2025 at 6:07 PM
Yeah but they plan around it in ways that work like getting 1000s of users through phishing emails that require little overhead or payroll instead of legitimate tech service outfits that are trackable by means of having a storefront.
September 6, 2025 at 6:04 PM
I'm sure there might be a carrier doing it - but this is not what I have seen with known carriers. Well not any on this platform. AT&T might do that shit but last I heard you can't access bluesky on AT&T devices lol
September 6, 2025 at 6:02 PM
Well yeah they apparently could sell it to the police camera citizen tracking companies that were caught buying a bunch of stolen data XD
September 6, 2025 at 6:00 PM
That would would get caught even faster because in addition to the bank angle - you also have the occasional good person whos gunna immediately take that to the cops XD
September 6, 2025 at 5:58 PM
Actually no, that is definitely a manufacturer thing not the carrier. It's Samsung doing it not Verizon. I have cheaper phones that have never been on a carrier plan and after being factory reset they have that software.
No carrier needed
September 6, 2025 at 5:54 PM
Is that a carrier application. I thought that was a manufacturer cheap phone application. Like low and Samsung phones have that but if you buy their flagship one it doesn't have that sort of thing.
September 6, 2025 at 5:53 PM
However, I definitely know of stories of people falling for "free tech help" where they did have information stolen when somebody did work for them "as a favor"
September 6, 2025 at 5:46 PM
"how is all of our customers financial data being stolen?"
"Well, it looks like they have a charge for services from the same computer tech."
September 6, 2025 at 5:45 PM
I'm trying to think of how real this threat actually is. Like on one hand I'm sure that it certainly would be possible. God knows I've seen half the world's bank passwords. Often on a monitor sticky.
But CC data is pretty secure even on the machine. Also banks would connect the dots pretty quickly.

Having worked in tech a while, that dude must have been like 3 days on the job. Because seeing random strangers shit is interesting for like - a bit. By month 10 of people bringing you stuff like "why aren't these nude photos transferring to my Chinese girlfriend" it's like - dude, really?

I have also been playing this recently, I have also come to a similar conclusion XD
