What harm are you referring to?

I think you're describing someone who isn't good at their job. I don't think it's about roles, so much.

Guns are bad. When will we admit this and do something about it?
January 7, 2026 at 7:59 PM
I don't see this as separate, at least WRT software. An architecture that isn't grounded in engineering is pretty-much worthless, IMO.

I think this is unfair. I think the survey part of the book isn't helpful other than to get some accounts of having a BS job. But I think it's very easy for people to see value in *their* jobs when it's pretty clear that if they went away it wouldn't really matter.
January 7, 2026 at 7:03 PM
Have you read the book?

There are always layers. Sometimes you can ignore the layer above or below, but sometimes you can't.

It wasn't that long ago when you could be aware of CPU interactions when writing software, but it's now so complex that simple rules rarely apply. Thankfully, CPUs and compilers are so good now...

Hmm. I've been doing software for almost 40 years and I can't really conceive of not "engineering" code. Sometimes systems are so large that you can't know them all, but you always have to know *enough* in order to solve the problem at hand. I guess I don't get the concept of "coder".

@ryanlcooper.com answered this. Apparently there's a new federal law.
January 7, 2026 at 2:52 AM
I get that. How is a coder different from a software architect?
January 7, 2026 at 2:50 AM
What do you mean by "software architecture"?
January 7, 2026 at 2:08 AM
What law is being broken?
January 7, 2026 at 2:03 AM
There is no good reason for a single executive to which everyone answers.
January 6, 2026 at 4:01 PM
Somehow the system persists. It is the *system* that permits this. Why we permit the entire govt. to be controlled by one person is just beyond me.
January 6, 2026 at 3:26 PM
My congressperson still says "bipartisan" all day long and she's a dem. They're pointless, really.
January 6, 2026 at 3:22 PM
Huh?
January 5, 2026 at 10:53 PM
It's done. Let's work for the future instead of rehashing the past.
January 5, 2026 at 10:52 PM
Aren't these evil dorks in charge because democracy?
January 5, 2026 at 10:41 PM
And yet they make hiring take months and consume absurd levels of resources.
January 5, 2026 at 10:22 PM
Not until they can live on Hot Pockets.
January 5, 2026 at 2:38 AM
Ignore the words. It's the actions that matter.
January 3, 2026 at 11:41 PM
Any statement that starts with how Maduro is a bad guy is crap.
January 3, 2026 at 6:53 PM
Your attachment to the military and its thuggery is disgusting. Your talk of dictators is worthless in light of the current state of your own country. It's as if you think this would have been ok if Congress had been notified. So wrong.
January 3, 2026 at 3:03 PM
Blowing up boats is not debatable.
January 3, 2026 at 2:53 PM
Many of those "don't follow illegal orders" congresspeople voted for the defense budget. Feckless schmucks.
