Do you know these buds?
April 3, 2025 at 6:14 PM
All the perennials in my yard are blooming. Really hoping we don't get a freeze. April is my city's 2nd wettest month and all these buds are early.

I moved cardboard from a new planting area and found some large earthworms getting ready to repopulate the area. Look at the sizes!
These are not composting worms, they'll be aerating and stirring the garden soil soon

Zone 5b. Started seeds today to test germination, lots of 5 & 6 year old stock. Most seeds last a lot longer than the package says, the germination percentage just goes down substantially. I did buy new seeds for this year but I won't waste the old ones. Alt txt gives details.

On a practical note, if you're in the US government buy your seeds now. I'm at least 8 weeks from planting cold hardy vegetables but my garden store has seeds now. I didn't stock up or buy more than this season's needs, but I bought all open pollinated and no f1s.

"Hong Kong is one of the last places in the world where bamboo is still widely used for scaffolding in construction. It’s flexible, strong + cheaper than steel + aluminium... Scaffolders can erect enough bamboo to engulf a building in a day — even hours — using techniques that are 1000s of yrs old"
Why Hong Kong uses bamboo scaffolding: visual explainer
An ancient practice, suitable only for people with nerves of steel, remains alive and well in a modern city full of skyscrapers.

The heater died in 1 of our large worm trays (95 cubic ft ) so I'm hand rescuing worms and they'll go into makeshift trays in the house basement til I can figure a fix for the large tray.

First seed catalog arrived. That's a month earlier than it's been for 30 years or more.

Planted garlic today, December 4 outside Denver Colorado. Zone 5b but 64 fahrenheit so why not. Maybe I'll add onion and brassica seeds. Really early vegetables would be a treat this spring

It might be snowy outside but when the family is in a food coma later I'm going to get the asparagus seeds started so I can plant them later this spring
