Losing a job is intensely stressful, and often has consequences for behavior and mental health. But some of its psychological effects may run counter to expectations.

It is insane how bad universities have been at messaging their value to US: our hegemony in high education create both an amazing export (higher education itself that people all over the world demand at retail price) but also fuel our tech dominance. Universities truly do make America great.
There are a bunch of articles like this, which argue that Trump is going after institutions because of their failures.
The reality is Trump is going after institutions - bureaucracy, military, judges, lawyers, media - because he is an authoritarian who wants control.

Trump’s Battles With Colleges Could Change American Culture for a Generation
Many in higher education worry Trump’s efforts to bend academia to his will could end American leadership in research and science. Universities are not finding many allies to defend them.

OK, I wrote my “who’s going to enforce it?” piece. It’s a lengthy read, trying to respond to a lot of questions I’ve gotten over the past three weeks, but it’s about democracy so I decided it was worth it to lay out in depth, with examples, what I’ve been talking about here and elsewhere.
Don't let Donald Trump and Elon Musk talk us out of democracy
Trump and Musk are testing the limits, trying to sell America on being an authoritarian state — but they can’t do it unless we allow them to do so.

Absolutely correct.

Call your House representatives. Write them actual letters. Show up at their local offices. Flood the zone.

Demand they draw the line while they still can.
If Congressional Democrats vote for a budget and debt ceiling increase while Trump and Musk are breaking very serious laws and usurping Congress's power of the purse, it'll be enablement. Validation. A pathetic path to historical infamy.
I strongly agree with @brianbeutler.bsky.social. Take a stand.
Democrats Approach Their Enabling Moment
If Democrats provide the decisive votes to fund this government, it will reverberate through history for all time.
