I love the Trackstar videos with Jack Coyne so I thought I'd listen to the podcast and of course the first guest is Kelefa Sanheh from TNY. He's adorbable.

I did not know I would find the Uniqlo article so interesting, but I did. Bella Freud however was infuriating.

One of my favorite essays of the summer tho was Hilton Als on black style v fashion. So chic, so hip.

I also read Justin Chang's review of F1 - trust him to make the Pitt pun with the necessary lightness of touch.

The history of NATO was a really good read. Apparently Rutte has a fab sense of humor and was born for diplomacy.

I should read the piece about teens and screens, esp since I am getting hints that it's not the usual gloom and doom. But when I read TNY it's generally time when I am taking my own personal break from teens and/or screens.

Back in a June issue - the profile/recent history of Philly's Mutter Museum was great, especially if you've done some thinking about freaks, disability and history.

But the more recent history of the CIA was...less satisfying. Written from that weird position they've got us in where the left is hoping the CIA will do the right thing. I'm getting too old for this world.

Oh that history of tariffs was good.

You can always find another girl who agrees with you that Grace Paley is f*cking amazing. But that girl is not always such a good writer as Zadie Smith. Her bit on Grace Paley back in the fiction issue was a joy to read.

I read a review in TNY for a summer mystery called The House at Buzzards Bay. Then I read an excerpt on Libby, liked the style, and bought the book. I enjoyed it but not enough to keep it or recommend it and I could tell early on that it was a bit of a Roger Ackroyd situation.

Jia Tolentino was worth the read. Her distinction between liberation and liberalization was brilliant and sort of buried in a book review of what two mid thinkers think about Gen Z sex.

One paragraph into Justin Chang's review of Mission Impossible I am audibly guffawing. He's the best. Truly, we live in a golden age.

"At times, though, I wanted more emphasis on the deranged energy of the prophet's vision." This is, for me, a review cliche - the banality of the language of the first half of the sentence in contrast with the precise accurate and strange description of a work of art.

I also enjoyed reading Alex Ross on Salome (for the billionth time - he writes about this opera A LOT). But I guess if there are two productions in NY this spring he's the man for the job. Still...

I'd watch the Pavements film even if Hua Hsu's review of it wasn't so good. But it is.

And so was the profile of Ryan Coogler.

New Yorker article on democratic backsliding in the US and Hungary was very good - if memes about what people living under Hitler should have done don't seem like quite the right fit.

But if u want to *enjoy* something, read Lane on a minor mid-century mystery novelist. I think he writes best when he's NOT writing about film.

Heller on Harvard was like the opposite. A hot mess, too little, too late.

So I AM going to post my favorite articles from The New Yorker. This week, Wallace-Wells on liberals building things was a good writer with a historical tale on a timely issue.
