“California is so far using forty per cent less natural gas to generate electricity than it did in 2023, which is the single most hopeful statistic I’ve seen in four decades of writing about the climate crisis.”

Mount Taranaki, in New Zealand, is now a legal “person”.

You read that right.

The Rights of Nature movement seeks to recognize nature, or some component of it — like rivers or specified ecosystems — is a legal “person”.

What does this do?

Gives #nature “standing” to help protect nature.

On climate, did you know that only 11% of people in the US (and even smaller percentages in Canada, the UK, Australia and beyond) are dismissive?

Yet because their voices are so loud and persistent, people often think they’re 50%.

This is why I advocate so strongly for using YOUR voice!

It sounds like the Government will announce New Zealand's next climate target under the Paris Agreement today.

The UK has committed to cutting emissions by 81% by 2035 - last year I looked at whether NZ could do the same: newsroom.co.nz/2024/11/25/t...
UK to slash climate pollution by 81%. Could NZ do the same?
The Government's decision to slam the brakes on climate policy sets New Zealand up for an expensive or embarrassing new Paris target.

I spent time in the redwoods at Muir Woods on Mon. Reading Kathy Willis' 'Good Nature', which brings together all the science about how nature improves our health, I was keen to notice any positive impact. And I had my best nights sleep in a fortnight according to my fitness tracker. Thanks nature!

I would add:

It never meant that 1.49 was safe, and 1.51 was all over.

Rather, the conclusions of the IPCC 1.5C report were clear:

“1.5C was never the difference between safety + ruin, between hope + despair. It was negotiated by govts trying to answer a big q: What’s the highest global temp increase — and associated level of dangers — societies should strive to avoid?”

2024’s Record-Breaking Heat Brought the World to a Dangerous Threshold. Now What?
Global temperatures last year crept past a key goal, raising questions about how much nations can stop the planet from heating up further.

I’m a scientist who studies how climate change impacts our lives and the places we love.

Most of us are worried, but many feel stuck on what to do. If that's the way you feel, check out this list below!

We can’t fix it alone, but I know we can together. 💚
