It frustrates me when people say to read the room. I’m fucking autistic and the only room I can read is an empty one

It turns out the app is actually great if you follow more than 100 people who mostly don’t post. I think if I keep following more people and getting a better feed it might be Twitters nail in the coffin.

Who knew you needed to follow people to have a good social media experience/lh/s

every time i question my decision to leave the US, i’m reminded that i actually had no other choice because as a trans Black immigrant the chances of being detained by ICE were too high.

in fact it’s my duty to make this work because giving up is not an option either.

Everyone likes to say they want to support disabled and neurodiverse people until it comes to actually listening to us. When we tell you what to do to increase accessibility (because more accessibility benefits everyone) you all placate us and then do whatever the hell you want anyway. #disabled

no one should ever be incarcerated (yes, involuntary commitment counts) for a MH crisis, psychiatric violence overwhelmingly affects Black people, and every single person who claims anti racism, anti police violence, prison abolition, HAS to join us in psych abolition. fuck this bullshit

Forget the 'stunts'—what happened to Lil Nas X is terrifying

Definitely. Even before DX me being autistic was a huge point of contention in our family. There were days where my mom would sit watching me do homework until I cried. I was made fun of for covering my ears. My interests were shamed and I never felt safe sharing my feelings or interests
Q2: Do you think being autistic or otherwise neurodivergent influences your family relationships? #AutChat
August 24, 2025 at 10:08 PM
I don’t know. I think so. I used to believe they were great parents when I was young because I didn’t know that level of emotional control and coercion wasn’t normal.
Q5: Has your relationship with your family of origin changed over time? (From childhood to adulthood, during adulthood?) #AutChat
August 24, 2025 at 10:01 PM
I’m the only one diagnosed. I suspect my dad is autistic too though because of his intense interests and communication difficulties. But some of the communication problems come from him being HoH and unwilling to accommodate himself in any way (no captions, hearing aids, writing)
Q4: Is anyone else in your family autistic/similarly neurodivergent? If so, are your relationships with them different than with your other family members? #AutChat

Yeah they know. My mom once said she regrets getting me diagnosed because she thought I could do way more before and that I was giving up on myself. But overall it didn’t change the structure the relationship other than possibly giving my parents more ammo.
Q3: Do others in your family of origin know you’re autistic/similarly neurodivergent? If so, did it change your relationship (if it happened when you were old enough to remember)? #AutChat

Tw emotional abuse

It’s really hard and complicated. I’m closest to my middle brother. But my parents can be very coercive and don’t take my disability needs seriously and they can get mad at me for showing autistic traits.
Q1: What is your relationship like with your family of origin? Are you closer to some family members than others? #AutChat
August 24, 2025 at 9:56 PM
My name is Perri (he/him) and my family of origin is super overwhelming and stressful (even abusive) and I still live with them unfortunately.
Q0: Introduce yourself! Say anything you like about yourself or your interest in #AutChat or in today's topic, relationship to family of origin.

I have evil intent. I’m broke AF waiting on my disability case to go through and my iPad (which is my AAC device) started glitching. I can’t afford a new iPad. I can barely afford gas to get to appointments

If you’re autistic, tell your story. We need so many more autistic stories than we have. We need diverse autistic characters with different perspectives and experiences. If you’re allistic trying to write an autistic character listen to lots of different autistic people and get a sensitivity reader
Q5: What advice would you give to autistic/neurodivergent authors? To neurotypical authors? To people who are recommending fiction for others to read or watch? #AutChat
March 16, 2025 at 8:53 PM
Definitely Silas from the Spirit bares its teeth. I resonated with how he was trained to be the perfect (allistic ) girl but he couldn’t live up to it How he was constantly trying to be perfect and anxious about every misstep. But no matter how he masked they could tell there was something “wrong”
Q4: Have you seen portrayals of autistic characters that strongly resonate with you? Is there anything you would change or add to them to make them even more representative of your experience? #AutChat
March 16, 2025 at 8:43 PM
Silas is a autistic trans boy who’s autism feels similar to mine. He’s the main character of The Spirit Bares its Teeth by Andrew Joseph White.

Peridot is an autistic coded AAC user from Steven Universe

I’m having trouble thinking of others but know there are
Q3: Do you know of autistic or similarly neurodivergent characters who share other identities with you? (For example: autistic characters who are women and/or people of color and/or trans and/or…etc) #AutChat
March 16, 2025 at 8:31 PM
I feel like in Sci fi fantasy autistic coded characters are more likely to be inventors or magic users. I think in books we can sometimes get a better sense of an autistic character’s internal state whereas visual media might focus on the autistic character’s external behavior.
Q2: Do you see autistic or similarly neurodivergent characters portrayed differently in some genres compared to others? For example, in mysteries vs science fiction vs realistic books, TV, or movies. #AutChat
March 16, 2025 at 8:23 PM
I really resonate with some alien autistic coded characters. I love Peridot from Steven universe. But I definitely get how only having non human autism coding can be dehumanizing. I think the best way to avoid this is if your story has humans also having a human autistic or autistic coded character
Q1: Sometimes a story will portray a nonhuman character as “autistic-coded”. For example, robots, aliens, changelings, etc., might be portrayed with autistic traits. How do you feel about this? Are there specific examples you particularly like or dislike? #AutChat
March 16, 2025 at 8:18 PM
Well written autistic and autistic coded characters make me feel seen. I don’t always relate to non autistic stories even though I do enjoy them. But when I see an autistic character I always think they’re like me. There is just a different level of emotional resonance
Q4: Why or why aren’t autistic characters in books/movies/TV shows/other media important to you? #AutChat
March 9, 2025 at 10:55 PM
TW restraint

Music From Music. I think we need more representation of nonspeaking and high support needs people . But that portrayal normalized prone restraint which has resulted in deaths.

Shawn from the Good Dr. this portrayal blamed autism for bigoted behavior unrelated to being autistic
Q2: What do you think are the worst examples of autistic characters in books, movies, TV shows, and other media? #AutChat
