For those interested it appears to be dichromatic which means the hue depends on concentration and the path length light travels through. The solution from the before was red as the bulk liquid and blue in smaller amounts. This pic of the solution being drawn through a tube shows the effect nicely

I can’t say what exactly it is since it’s a custom order for a client, but you’re pretty spot on mentioning aniline! This is the synthesis of a 2-substituted aniline and the color is from a mix of air-oxidized byproducts
