For anyone worried they might forget to add alt text, Bluesky has a setting that will remind you to add alt text before posting any images.
Go to "Settings," then "Accessibility." Select the checkbox for "Require alt text before posting."

And, of course, writing alt text can be overwhelming, and some people will need help doing that. That includes people with certain disabilities and certain access needs. Veronica has graciously created a thread of tools and resources to help people.

I’m glad so many people have found my “capybara method” for how to write alt text and image descriptions helpful! However, I know conflicting access needs exist and not everyone can write their own #AltText, so here’s an ongoing thread of tools that can help. Inclusion in thread ≠ endorsement

Alt text describes an image to people who can't see it, so it functions as an alternative. Photo captions, on the other hand, are written to complement the image and add context. Usually, photo captions add context that sighted users wouldn't be able to intuit just by looking at the image.
