On 8 April 1944 in the Bagnoli area, Lt. General Mark W. Clark awarded a battle streamer to Company G, 3rd Battalion, 504th PIR. The guidon was held by Pvt. Harold T. Williams.

Just five months later, Pvt. Williams would be tragically killed during Operation Market Garden on 26 September 1944.

In February 1945 General Gavin personally welcomed his men at Suippes after the brutal battles of the Ardennes and Hürtgen Forest. After weeks of freezing cold, relentless combat, and heavy losses, the 82nd Airborne stood strong.
