HIGURASHI 8: MATSURIBAYASHI (2006)

flawed but R07's plot weaving is superhuman. his critique on christianity, that god would even have to sacrifice his son, is my realization of his theme of allowing outsider views to challenge our stuck cultures. takano's backstory stinks. au au au. oiishi=👑

HIGURASHI 7: MINAGOROSHI (2005)

I'm all for stories of hope, and I'm really proud that Ryukishi turned these ideas into something bold with Umineko, but this a taxing read that is bloated by the author's fear of a single detail not being understood to a shimmer.

HIGURASHI 6: TSUMIHOROBOSHI

Setting aside "the Yakuza Who Don't Do Anything are cool and good" bit, the theme of carrying burdens and sins and the purpose of confession, forgiveness, and love is great. Incredible highs, but at this point I've lost interest in the broader story.

AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON (1981)

Damn, John Landis. A great movie. It is front to back a comedy movie with a dash of horror. You have dreamy scenes people love Lynch for. Incredible practical effects. The main guys dress like Mario and Luigi and talk like they're on an episode of Friends

HIGURASHI 5: MEAKASHI

Some fun spins on the Torikaebaya formula. It's novel to me because I'm not familiar with 9th century Japanese stories. But. Higurashi 2's ending is Extremely Lame, and thinking about it is a multi-hour drag. Despite my distaste, I can see people resonating with this.

HIGURASHI 4: HIMATSUBUSHI

A story for the big boys. A great time full of thoughtful scenes. It opens up the plot in a way where the underground is so seemingly powerful that all questions can be answered by "idk, the Mafia I Guess." But it doesn't matter. Oishi is here to wear a robe

HIGURASHI 3: TATARIGOROSHI

A long meditation on powerlessness and extreme vigilantes. Suspenseful with an ending so left-field that I'm surprised it's surprising. Ryukishi's experience as a civil service worker is prominent. A huge upswing after Higurashi 2's silliness.

ZZ Gundam making one of the franchises' best characters, putting him on the bench by EP 12, and then returning for the finish line as a diet version of himself is one of several crimes that makes ZZ a slog

Starting Reconguista in G which feels relevant given the sex negative slop from true freaks

MOBILE SUIT ZETA GUNDAM: A NEW TRANSLATION (2004-2006)

yes, the new ending is weak. but you're getting a streamlined version of a complex story. it doesn't replace the original, and the concise rhythm helps some characters come across lovely. worth watching for the new audio alone.

MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM: HATHAWAY (2021)

Great OST and some wild angles in this. I was not expecting an exploration of losing your identity while navigating a corrupt economic and political system. Murase's directing is great. Tomino's writing maintains a heartbroken optimist's world view. So good

MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM: CUCURUZ DOAN'S ISLAND

This takes one of the best episodes of 0079 and gives it time to breathe. So thoughtful from beginning to end. Yoshikazu Yasuhiko's directing is beautiful and a worthy end cap to his career. It's everything I wanted from The Origin anime adaptation.

G-SAVIOR (1999)

if you're drawn into daytime TV budget scifi, this is great. if not, maybe the weight and scale of the cg fights in the last 20 minutes are worth thumbing through. but hey. the ost on that PS2 game is great

GUNDAM: REQUIRM FOR VENGEANCE (2024)

a stiff, amateur show. the caricature of a Tough Guy's gundam plot. amuro anachronistically slaughters a bunch of red zaku. Zeon guys sitting around saying "this is war." less expressive than igloo and weird shot composition. animation with no love.

MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM SEED: FREEDOM

a silly movie that halfheartedly ponders whether eugenics is cool. in the end, eugenics is ok as long as there's enough freedom. lackus, voice of reason, tells you that love is good. the bad guys realize they are incels and die. kira cries, gets cuck aftercare

SPACE RUNAWAY IDEON: BE INVOKED (1982)

Masterclass. Sugiyama's music is incredible. The visuals depict immense scale, beauty, and death and death and death. Tomino's writing is sharp and captures his anxiety about our acceleration towards pointlessness.

SPACE RUNAWAY IDEON (1980)

Its ad nauseum amplifies its main theme: no matter where you run, humanity's stupidity -- religious fundamentalism, revenge, fear of the other, pride, and power itself -- will pose a threat to the fragile and flawed good trying to take root. Relentless & beautiful.
