My honest reaction to this:

I feel like we need more roads and streets to get bidirectional paths on both sides. This exists in some places here, like on Normandale Boulevard and Cedar Grove Parkway, but there's plenty of other roadways+streets where there's enough space to fit them on both sides.

Speaking of which, I present, the shortest paved trail ever.

Finally biking underneath the I-494 Orange Line busway underpass, I have come to appreciate how shockingly long it is.

Continuing from the Edina Promenade, Nine Mile Creek trail run right up against the border of Richfield and Edina along Xerxes Ave, before crossing the entirety of Richfield along 75th & 76th streets.

Time to fix my lack of posting with a quick tour of the Edina Promenade. An example of how to integrate regional trail planning into suburban infill development. Connecting into the Nine Mile Creek regional trail, there is neat developments in this section through Edina, like the Centennial Lakes.

Went cycling in Richfield, and while the infrastructure is already lovely, I am glad to see the city continuously improve with more bike+ped infrastructure improvements. Found this section of bumped out crossings, likely to be made permanent in a couple years, with the same red paint as on 73rd St!

I am optimistic for future TOD as the Orange Line has already been pushing more suburban infill development. I see plans shifting towards more residential+mixed use as other suburban office TOD plans turned into residential ala South Loop. We could have a future transit accessible maze too! 😂

Eagan does have some surprisingly good transit oriented development next to the Twin Cities Outlets Mall. Mid rise, mixed use density and paved trails on both sides of the street.

I'm so glad Northstar service is finally getting some upgrades, after years of this pandemic scheduling. Even if it's only a partial restoration, this is still huge.

As a fixed gear ebike rider, trust me. It's worth it.

Give this Trance Classic a spin if you haven't already. Absolutely gorgeous remix of one of Oceanlab's best songs ever.

Though they built a slip lane, in exchange they closed a street to car access and instead limited it to pedestrians and bikes. Overall a major improvement to accessibility and reducing car traffic in neighborhoods.

Bloomington, 2021 vs 2023. This is the 106th St exit for I-35W, which now has paved multimodal trails on both sides and painted bike lanes. Though I think this street is still too wide for unprotected bike lanes, this is an undeniable huge improvement. Can't wait to see more streets look like this!

So turns out, this is part of a town-wide system! www.traveliowa.com/trails/osceo...

Sibley, Iowa, has a concrete protected downtown bike lane. 2,800 people. Nearest major metropolitan areas are Sioux City and Sioux Falls. Maybe climate, population, even being rural isn't the issue, but instead a town or city's priorities in planning. This can happen everywhere!

Mall of America transit station bike demand is absolutely ever-present. They should add way more racks

From the hit TV show SWAT, why did they get Amtrak trains just to do scenes with people breaking into freight cars? It's the funniest shit ever seeing passenger trains with just this random graffitied freight car in the middle.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off at the luxury transit oriented development apartment pool? More likely than you think

Best part is having good standards on bus access to E-ZPass lanes and shoulders for buses! Largest bus shoulder network in the country! Even if we should and can remove more urban highways.
August 13, 2023 at 2:59 AM
We need to contextualize highways better. In the suburban Twin Cities, I-494 is being reconstructed with one principle in mind; streets should be separated from roads, not treated as exits. Highways can work when you don't use them to pollute the rest of an urban environment.

Forgive the wildfire smog, but taking the train between St Paul and Chicago is objectively the best way to go. The geography and views are so good, can't wait for Great River service to start!

You know what, maybe we should start reserving parking spots for compact vehicles only when they're at the most convenient locations, such as this lower level of a parking garage near the entrance.
August 12, 2023 at 7:49 PM
There is zero dedicated bike infrastructure for almost a 1-1.5 mile radius from this development, yet there are multiple bike racks including a bike repair station. Multiple residents have bikes already. Building with future modal share and infrastructure in mind is the way forward.

Bloomington Central Station, what all used to be surface parking lots turned into a human scale space with a pedestrianized spine and public park. More suburbs should start looking like this.
