When a tree falls in the forest, it provides opportunity!

Tree fall is a natural part of a forest’s lifecycle, as breaks in the canopy allow more sunlight to reach the forest floor, giving new trees out a chance to grow. Mature forests have many differently aged trees for this reason.

Species spotlight: Running cedar or Diphasiastrum digitatum is a species of club moss native to the Eastern US.

Fun fact: Running cedar has spores instead of seeds and an old mixture for magician flash flame was made from running cedar spores because it quickly ignites and quickly goes away.

Species spotlight: Elaegnus umbellata or autumn olive is a species indigenous to Eastern Asia. Autumn olives are a hardy and aggressive invasive species able to grow almost anywhere. It was first brought over to America as an ornamental species.

Spring is right around the corner! The Bieker 500-Year Forest is full of Spicebush, a shade-loving species that blooms in early spring, giving the forest’s shrub layer a wonderful yellow hue. Check for a post next Friday to see how much it’s bloomed!

The 500-Year Forest Foundation is a Virginia-based nonprofit that works to create future old-growth. Old-growth forests, characterized by their lack of human disturbance, are increasingly rare in the Eastern U.S. It is our mission to preserve mature forests, allowing them to evolve into old-growth.
