24 THE GREEN REVOLUTION deal more than that: "The ecology issue is not only of primary and lasting importance, but ... may indeed constitute the most dangerous and difficult challenge that humanity has ever faced." To have not only isolated that challenge but begun a response to it was an accomplishment that gave evidence that a social revolution in America had indeed begun. The high point of that phenomenon was an event called, with typical sixties grandeur, Earth Day 1970. It had begun with a speech by Wisconsin senator Gaylord Nelson in Seattle in 1969 in which he proposed a kind of nationwide "teach-in" on college campuses, following the model of the antiwar teach-ins earlier in the decade. The response, Nelson reported, "was nothing short of remarkable," and so many inquiries poured into his office that he siphoned a $125,000 grant from some federal well and set up a staff of three Harvard graduate students in a Washington headquarters to handle the load. The Nixon White House was opposed, but enough political pressure built so that a number of federal agencies, particularly the Interior Depart- ment, were encouraged to help prepare materials for the event. Campus activists, then at a peak in opposition to an increasingly unpopular war, geared up enthusiastically to make the connec- tion between the institutions supporting military intervention on the one hand and chemical pollution on the other. No very precise calculation of the number of participants is possible, but April 22 saw probably the largest of all the demonstrations of the 196os. According to the organizers, 1,500 colleges and 10,000 schools took part, many campuses had street demonstrations and parades, and large rallies were held in New York, Washington, and San Francisco. Time estimated that some 20 million people were part of what Nelson called "truly an astonishing grass-roots explosion": "The people cared and Earth Day became the first opportunity they ever had to join in a nationwide demonstration and send a big message to the politicians—a message to tell them to wake up and do some- thing." By April 22,1970, when ordinary Americans, including 10 million school children, gathered all over the country to celebrate the first Earth Day, a majority of those polled supported a strong national program to reduce environmental damage.34 As Theodore H. White wrote in The Making of the President 1972, "The environment cause had swollen into the favorite sacred issue of all politicians, all TV networks, all good- willed people of any party. "35

I'm just going to put this out there. When my first husband put himself in jail, he sent me a letter. I corrected his spelling, grammer & sentence structure in red ink. I then malied it back to him. I applaud Harvard.
