As we've shared before, 404 Media is joining hands with community organizers to throw a benefit show to raise money in support of immigrants and refugees as the Trump administration continues their dehumanizing crackdown across the U.S.

Handing “this powerful tech to police is like asking a 16-year old who just failed their drivers exams to pick a dozen classmates to hand car keys to,” Jake Laperruque, deputy director of the Center for Democracy & Technology's Security and Surveillance Project, told 404 Media.

What can Mobile Identify do?

404 Media downloaded a copy of the app and decompiled its code, a common practice among security researchers and technology journalists. While the Play Store page does not mention facial recognition, parts of the app’s code make clear references to scanning faces.

ICE-spotting app developers tell 404 Media the decision to host CBP’s new app, and Google’s description of ICE officials as a vulnerable group in need of protection, shows that Google has made a choice on which side to support during the Trump administration’s violent mass deportation effort.

In September, 404 Media filed a lawsuit against ICE for access to its contract with Paragon, a company that sells powerful spyware for breaking into phones and accessing encrypted messaging apps.

The person behind this account does not seem to actually have any sort of vested interest in the US or in immigration. But they are nonetheless spamming horrific videos because the Facebook algorithm is rewarding them for that type of content, and because Facebook directly makes payments for it.
