Public transport rarely stops outside your home or final destination. The first and last mile walking or cycling is so much more pleasant, quieter and safer with a default urban/village 20mph limit.
#20splenty for less noise, cheaper insurance premiums and 25% fewer people killed or injured.

If you are responsible for managing/influencing speed limits set in your urban/village spaces then keeping 30mph as a norm creates harm that way exceeds any benefits. Implementing 20mph as a default or norm consistently lowers casualties by 20-30%.

Setting the urban/village speed limit at 20mph/30kmh will upset some drivers. But success isn't measured by whether drivers "raise their right hand" but by "drivers raising their right foot". And all the evidence shows that they do and community-wide 20mph/30kmh defaults reduce casualties by some 2

It was no surprise that the award winning Welsh 20mph default urban/village limit was heavily featured in the RSGB national conference today. A 25% reduction in casualties, £45 reduction in insurance all make it a great example of how 20mph limits make better places to be.

At today's Road Safety GB National Road Safety Conf #20splenty will be presenting on how "Setting 20mph as an urban/village norm has the power to deliver one of the quickest wins for the UK and in particular England and Northern Ireland".

Yes, it's scary for children on our roads. But putting a 20mph limit outside a school does NOT fix the problem. Children need a friendly, safer 20mph limit on their whole route from home to school. It's why 20's Plenty should be community wide.

New report analyses post implementation public support for 20mph limits in Scottish Borders Council. Not a "silver bullet", but majority of interviewees did not wish to see a return to 30mph speed limits.

Since setting the Welsh 20mph default in Sep 23:
In Caerphilly 61.3% of votes went to parties supporting the 20mph default.
Every politician campaigning against 20mph in MS, MP or PCC elections in Wales has lost.
Over 1,000 fewer people have been injured/killed on Welsh urban/village roads

School gate risk - While having 20mph outside a school is laudable, that immediate area accounts for just 1 in 5 casualties. Children need protection of 20mph on the whole of their journey to and from school, whether they are walking, wheeling or cycling.

In 2008 the House of Commons Transport Committe recommended far wider use of 20mph limits with PACTS recommending a 20mph national default. Had UK Gov done that in 2008, then Welsh evidence (-25%) shows it would have saved over 300,000 casualties on UK roads since then.

Failing to adopt a national approach to 20mph as an urban/village norm in England increased 2024 casualties by 15,000 per annum and insurance costs by £2bn. Read our latest press release coinciding with the release of the DfT 2024 road casualty stats. bit.ly/4gIBPlJ

The adoption of a 20mph/30kmh general limit for urban/village roads will go down in history as one of the most effective road safety initiatives ever with a 25% reduction in casualties. Those opposing it are promoting the imposition of avoidable road trauma and death.

It would be great if we could take a whole country and change the default speed limit to 20mph and then compare it to one left at 30mph. What if it reduced casualties by 25% and with lower risk reduced insurance premiums by £45 a year? Well it did! bit.ly/4gIBPlJ

So you are starting a family and settling down. Would you move to an area with 20mph limits that gave your children safer streets, lower noise and opportunities to walk or cycle to school, or demand that you drive at speeds that are not survivable for vulnerable road users.

With 20mph/30kmh now recognised internationally as the right speed limit for urban/village roads shared by all users, how much culpability for death and injury rests with those politicians and police forces unwilling to support or enforce such limits?

Is yours a "do nothing" council that refuses to accept the evidence that 30mph is the urban/village speed limit that kills and injures a third more people because it isn't setting 20mph as a default. It's time for England to "do what works" in road safety bit.ly/4gIBPlJ

In Wales, Cornwall, Edinburgh, London and so many places when most 30mph roads were changed to 20mph, people injured or killed by motor vehicles reduced by 20%+. With minimal change to journey times and £2bn saving in insurance costs it's a huge win. bit.ly/4gIBPlJ

The Welsh 20mph default reduced casualties by 25% and insurance costs by £90m. If done in England expect reductions of 15,000 casualties pa and insurance by £2bn pa. Implementation cost would be approx £0.5bn. For comparison, 1st yr depreciation on new cars registered in England in 2024 was £78bn
