Back with Primary again. The inimitable Stuart Tiffany is taking us through how local history helps structure learning but also makes it relevant and interesting to the pupils we teach.

Some great practical tips here for weaving more local history into the curriculum. It is one of the most obvious and most impactful ways to make your curriculum bespoke for your pupils

Really like seeing how a precious SHP conference has inspired much of this work. Curricula need to be bespoke to our localities.

Back now for session 2. @petejackson.bsky.social taking us through how local history has been integrated into the curriculum at Ryedale

Back with Danielle and Fred. Danielle showing how they drew on the oral histories of the community to bring the Miners’ strikes home for their students.

One really good defence for using local history - so many Primary resources make it seem like history only happened in the south. Judy exploring how prehistoric sites like Star Carr can shift pupils’ understanding of history and how it is connected to them.

Off downstairs to catch up with Rachel Bruce and Judy Clarke in the Primary workshop.

Currently looking at the ways in which careful use of maps can be used to support studies of change and continuity in Primary history

Really interested by this way of thinking about the historical consciousness being developed through a unit. Tying together big stories, local stories and identities.
November 28, 2024 at 5:46 PM
Love this focus on why the Miners’ strikes were a story which wasn’t just nice to tell, but NEEDED to be told. Powerful connections to communities and the needs of the young people who live in them. “What is the history your students NEED to learn because it’s about their community?”

We know there is so much creativity in the history teaching world, but it is not always easy to have the time to search for sources, or find the latest interpretations. PATHfinders aims to bring a raft of fascinating materials to your inbox each half term to inspire your planning /2
