it just seemed so efficient to us at the time :( :( :(

i've never tried hooking up the output to a crt though
(we acquired our f3 for reverse engineering and testing, using a custom rom. i haven't actually used it to play games much lol)

note that each games uses different ranges of scanlines, but this is just accomplished by just outputting black pixels on the first/last few scanlines, and instructing you to calibrate the monitor so the used region fills the screen.

in my testing, the video signal has been consistent during gameplay, but
at startup it does output a few very malformed frames (i.e. until graphics ram is initialized)
also, the hsync signal is kinda weird? during vblank the pulses are a different length and happen twice per scanline

i suspetc that theres s enough like backwash,
to make it past the needle and
so just swapping that isnt good enough..
