I will admit here that I don’t actually know the song “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number.” I just know that a song with that title by Steely Dan exists because jamming on that song inspired every song on Radiohead’s OK Computer according to the Clickhole oral history of same

Unfortunately I know the songs “Rikki don’t lose that number,” “reeling in the years” (if it’s called that), “all my friends,” and “daft punk is playing at my house” - because otherwise Steely Dan and LCD Soundsystem would be perfect examples of this category.

Imogen Heap, to me, is one of those artists like Wilco, or Fiona Apple, or Frank Ocean, or Judas Priest. They’re definitely out there doing their thing, and I’ve heard of them and I assume everyone else has too. But I couldn’t come close to naming a song.

It’s funny that 15 years ago everyone would have immediately known to say Tim Tebow and he doesn’t seem to have appeared yet in the replies. Maybe the quote tweets. But the era of Tebow that burned so bright at the time really is over.

I identify with Matthew Yglesias in that I too am a highly educated coward who does not want to be in a political environment with anyone to my left. The difference is a) I’m smarter than he is and b) I am willing to move left under the right circumstances
