Did you know that walking distance to class is a significant and meaningful predictor of grade performance in first year students? We didn't either, so we tested the proposition using data from W&M over two academic years when dorm allocation to first year students was random.

Well, Fox isn't really "news." It's state propaganda.

That reminds me of the old Soviet joke ...

"В «Правде» нет новостей, а в «Известиях» нет правды"

If a conservative friend shakes his head at the idea of "White privilege," just show him this canonical example.

They didn't, and they were cognizant of that issue and very deliberate.

Stop beating around the Busch ...

2/ viewpoint. I now know it's the fascist dismissal of Weimar as "Das System," a flawed and chaotic leftist regime that needed to be overthrown. At least he didn't refer to it as Das Judenrepublik." Maybe US occupation at least helped banish terms like that for a couple of generations.

I'm old enough to remember having those conversations with Germans. Back in 1971, one older German fellow who had grown up in the US and gone back to Germany in high school simply patted the teen me on the head by explaining how bad things were in the 20s. I didn't have a name to put to that ...

Depends upon what you mean by invest. I presume the Saudi’s could examine their sovereign wealth fund and see that there is already $400 billion invested in American stocks and bonds, and hundreds of billions more privately held, and think that they’ve already “invested” a trillion or close.

I know how you feel. The 20-year-old who twisted my 19 year-old arm into joining the staff of our college newspaper cofounded Bloomberg news. 😅

Cool. Texas's gerrymander ruled out for racial animus while California's, which does not suffer from that particular Constitutional problem, goes forward. We might end up with a blue wave akin to the tsunami after the Cretaceous extinction event.

And in 2029, the wrecking ball will clear the monstrosity off of the White House grounds and the East Wing and gardens will be historically restored. This will all be paid for by "voluntary" contributions from the exact set of "public spirited" donors who gave Trump the resources to deface the WH.

I had to look it up. I'm sure that says a lot about me ... 😅

2/ professionally staffed is to use the same powers that Trump has employed. Let the GOP complain about "destroying the civil service," or "politicizing justice." The only way back is through more chaos. Perhaps then the GOP will be willing to sign a treaty with Democrats to beef up protections.

The hacks that the Trump administration install to replace all the career DOJ lawyers that Trump has dismissed will need to be dismissed in turn on Jan 21st, 2029 if a Democrat occupies the White House. No questions. Fire 'em all. The only way to return to the status quo ante where the DOJ was

Maybe the people who buy up bankrupt cattle farms will think differently about which party actually cares ...

Oh, wait, I think wealthy GOP insiders are buying up a lot of the land from distressed small farmers.

I think there are outside witnesses who have seen "the files" and have a solid idea of what is in them. If a released version lacks what these witnesses know is contained in the files, we'll hear sirens go off.

Select all the frames with a cat…

In 2029, I hope people like her qualify for a a piece of a multi billion dollar accountability fund that we will need to set up to compensate victims of Republican criminal behavior.

Times change. These days, Trent Lott's behavior would get him a slavish following in the party. The effects of "common knowledge" differ if the rules of the game aren't the same for both sides.

If only we hadn't killed off the Ivory-billed woodpecker ...

Yes indeed!

Worse if you eat a fig ...... Newton.

Just out of curiosity, why do you care so deeply about my word choice when you clearly see the intent of my post? Just want to know. I'm starting to block people who use social media to nitpick vocabulary choices and use words like "disingenuous" and "pretend" in my direction.

It is, alas. Political leaders don't concede a millimeter in discussions, even when the evidence is stacked against them. We no longer have meaningful conversations across the aisle based on a common set of facts.

That was my world in the 80s. Small departments didn't have the $$ (or want to spend the $$) to rent a big suite.

I think this was a white guy ...

Fascism is a lot broader than racism.

But this is obvious. One shouldn't have to note it.

Bingo.

Good lord, get a life. Or get blocked.

Equally respectfully, the word "ambush" fits the situation. I'm growing very tired of all the responses trying to parse words to improve my very correct usage of the English language.

Why are people trying to word police me? Just stop it.

You're absolutely wrong. If you have ever read The Lord of the Rings, in the chapter "The Scouring of the Shire" the hobbits ambush the men who have taken over the shire for Saruman. A well-planned trap against a scumbag foe.

Sounds like a good one for @nytpitchbot.bsky.social
