sharing my unfinished(!) entry to the 2025 wordless world manga contest, which was acknowledged as a finalist entry despite its VERY rough state - and gave me the push to keep drawing again after years of being too scared to fail

this is the wonky wordless one-shot 'Alstroemeria' (pg 1-4 / 20)
Page 1/20 of amateur wordless one-shot manga ‘Alstroemeria’ The top of the page shows a wide view of a character beating another character in an alley, then walking away. The rest of the page shows a bigger knee-up view of the main character doing the beating, now walking through the streets - they're wearing baggy clothes, pants with a belt and chains, a big sweater with the hood being pulled over their head by a gloved hand, and a big leather jacket over top. Most of their face is covered by a black facemask, and unruly hair hanging over the right side, down into a messy ponytail. There is a small closeup of their visible left eye in a separate panel, which shows their tense expression, they seem frustrated, or even pained. Page 2/20 of amateur wordless one-shot manga ‘Alstroemeria’ The top right panel shows the character entering a small storefront labeled as a landscaping business with a tree-resembling logo. They emerge in the next panel hurriedly putting on a hat and jacket with the business logo. Another character, an older man smoking a cigarette, is seen waiting next to a kei-truck looking at his watch. The man spots the main character and (in a cartoonish, exaggerated manner) scolds them for being late with a hit over the head. The last panel shows them getting into the truck and the man noticing something about the main character. Page 3/20 of amateur wordless one-shot manga ‘Alstroemeria’ The top right panel shows the ungloved left hand of the main character, which is bruised after the alley fight. The mans eyes linger with a soft, slightly concerned expression. The next panel shows the top view of a simple but big academic looking building, and its courtyard in front of which the truck parks. The lower half of the page shows main character crouching to inspect the flowers of some shrubbery while holding a rake, and above them a vague silhouette in the building’s window of somebody sitting inside, casually holding their head as they look outside. Page 4/20 of amateur wordless one-shot manga ‘Alstroemeria’ The top half of the page shows the figure looking out the window; it’s a girl with short hair, glasses and a decorative fashion style, balancing a pencil between her nose and pouted lips. The desk beneath her seems covered in notes, books and drawing supplies. In the lower panels she seems to snap out of her thoughts and furiously start to draw again. An overhead view of the desk shows shes sketching a character and comic layouts.
