One of the most interesting media insights I've ever heard was the idea that Sonic is cool and Mario is fun.
What's cool changes constantly, so Sonic has been forced to change and be reinvented constantly.
What's fun is much more timeless, so Mario has stayed much more consistent and relevant

as an ADHD person I intuitively understand the Dungeons & Dragon rule that if you roll a nat 1 your character fails catastrophically at something they're an expert at and have done a thousand times.
