It is a bit disconcerting when you see an old TV programme that doesn't fill your TV screen. It's easy to forget what has changed. It feels stranger than black-and-white,

It started when I was in hospital, out of tough with things. There was a plan for the Isle of Axholme to be made an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

At the time the Government was Conservative. The news media don't tell you who rejected the application or just when that happened.

There is a champion boxer with the surname "Ball".

With so many sports using balls, headlines can be confusing.

Here in Britain, a Parliamentary Debate on requiring By-elections when an MP switches parties will be held on the 16th March.

This used to be done.

Party leaders will be worried about rebels staying in the Party and sabotaging policies, rather than risking salaries and expenses.

A Russian General has been shot in a restaurant in Moscow. He's not dead. He is the Military Intelligence boss (used to be called "GRU"). The official name has changed several times to hide the connection to spying. Wikipedia tells that story. The Russians have fooled the BBC headline writers.

TIL Shakespeare did work on plays I had never heard of.

The advert from a British supermarket is almost amusing.

The slogan is "Free From Italian-Style"

When they use "Free From" it usually means vegetarian or vegan. But that's not what the headline says.

The food was probably assembled in a factory no nearer to Italy than the city of Leeds.

There is a Cult founded by a man who had a long writing career in Pulp SF.

I am not astonished to see well-known names in modern SF who grew up in that Cult. However they quit, that experience has to be an influence on their writing. It's part of their life.

But what do they do to people now?

Yesterday, five-year-old Liam and his dad Adrian were released from Dilley detention center. I picked them up last night and escorted them back to Minnesota this morning.

Liam is now home. With his hat and his backpack.

People can argue, with reasons, about whether the Battle of Stamford Bridge was fought anywhere near the village of Stamford Bridge, near York, which was the city Harald Hardrada was defending against Harold Godwinesson. This was all part of 1066 and all that.

This spins off from a couple of threads I am in. I provided links to web-pages run by reputable organisations. They're not loaded with adverts or other abusive extras.

But should I just let them use cookies. Who can you trust?

I had a shop-name and a street name/number.

Google gave a location-marker on their own "maps" that was a couple of blocks away, on the wrong side of the street. Their Streetview images, half a year old, showed both sites as un-used and "To Let". But I could see the street-number.

Is this the real song, is this just parody?
Print in a songbook, tuneless ukelele...
Open your ears, look out from the tears, and see
I'm just a filker, no need for sympathy
Because my easy words, in a row, singing high, maybe low
Are lost from where the song goes,
It doesn't really matter to me....

The BBC runs a weekly news quiz. What do you remember about recent news?

It falls apart when they ask you to pick the reason why an infamous madman did what he did this week.

With each COVID infection, your brain's gray matter deteriorates 2-3%. The average American has had approximately five infections. If you think people are getting stupider, it's not your imagination.
Covid ages the brain 10x faster than natural aging.

If you proclaim to be progressive and inclusive, you should be on the front lines of sharing info about an ongoing mass disabling event.

Here I cover some of covid’s effects, the Semmelweis Reflex, and how to start caring.

I am grumpy this morning.

"Memorable information" is a network security concept imposed on us by people (I use the term loosely) who have no fsck-ing idea how human memory works.

Here in Britain the Lidl supermarket chain has a promotion for eastern and central European food, The brandname used is a trademark of Lidl in Germany. That doesn't mean it's a bad version, but I doubt somebody from Poland would hasten to seek it out. I value my Polish friends too much to ask them.

I have just been told that "new potatoes" are on the menu as a "wintery option."

Er, yes...

I have done enough ploughing to be very doubtful about anything labelled as a "Ploughman's lunch." It isn't so well balanced. even allowing for modern marketing redesign.

Friends in the USA ask mr what weather I am having.

It is raining. It's not quite freezing but the wind is gusting to Gale Force and the Wind Chill is bad.

The only source of hot air is politicians. They're easy to buy, but too expensive for most of us.

It got a blink-and-you'll-miss-it mention on the BBC.

Today, 27th January, is Holocaust Memorial Day.

We're supposed to remember, so that we don't repeat. Lighting a candle tonight is only a symbol. It isn't enough.

There has been another right-wing British politician. who was n the government, changing the party she is a member of. The leader of the Party she joined has managed to put out a photo which looks like an announcement of a coming wedding. Both display horrific smiles.

There are still people who think they are entitled to hunt my friends. This may not go well for such fools.
