This. I'm like that, too. I know the a setting will be changed as soon as one plays with and in it, but I prefer to make such changes after the players are involved, not before.
I love using published settings. I enjoy the challenge of isolating the feel of the setting, and creating stories that fit that feel. That said, I'm not afraid to change those settings. I just don't always want to deviate before the PCs get involved.

Kinda late to the party, but the default 3e/3.5 setting was called the Lands of Mystery. They were mapped in the Dungeon mags of the time, and surprisingly they share a lot of locations with 4e's implied setting (Nentir Vale/PoL world). This map is from the last Paizo Dungeon mag, for instance
