Taking lessons to heart
How hard is it to make a good detective video game? The story behind the excellent The Seance of Blake Manor, whose developers were changing integral parts of the design six months before release, might help answer that question.

Haven't had the chance to do work I can show, but here's some WIP concept of a bookshop interior. Not yet sure if this is a feasible level of detail for one person across an entire game. Gut feeling says no, but it might be good to push first and find out. More work required.

Recently played this demo and I think it's amazing. Perfectly captures the look. Mimicking the ink illustrations of the time in 3D couldn't have been easy but they knocked it out of the park. Gameplay is great too. Can't wait for it to be released.

I really do hate the term 'metroidbrania'. I think so do many of you. Let's nip it in the bud before it becomes something people are financially invested in.
Against 'Metroidbrania': a Landscape of Knowledge Games
What are knowledge games? How do we relate them to each other? What sub-genres exist – and which ones might be implied?

On the third hand (because spooky), I am nowhere close enough to hit the same high mark. So I need to find my own comfortable style and see what I can do with that.

On the other hand, I'm also inspired by the compositions from the interiors of gamebooks of the 1980s that I grew up with. Illustrations that speak directly to the reader. Here we have Ian McCaig, Alan Langford, Gary Chalke and so many more.

The idea for the visuals is to evoke on one hand the look of 1940s/50s inked illustrations. Joseph Clement Coll, Milton Canniff, Everett Raymond Kinstler, Al Williamson are major inspirations.

Very rough, very early concept work. Trying to gauge not just the look, but also my ability to deliver. Work is ongoing.
