Hey, I'm new here so I guess I should introduce myself.

Cyclist in the streets and engineer in the sheets. Little excel joke there.

I'm passionate about my family and friends, love to travel, and eat and drink well.

I'm trying hard not to correct everyone on the internet all at once.
And we're back. Bike is fixed and honestly, pretty quickly at that. Getting a part shipped out and replaced within a week is pretty good. Big thanks to @grumpybikes.bsky.social for getting me in so quickly!

Alright #yycbike. Is this broken? Or just a loose nut? I went to pass someone today and dropped the chain off the front. Went to fix it and found this. In the video I'm just pedaling backward so you can see the movement.

Paging @grumpybikes.bsky.social 😁

Phew. Tough bike commute for sure today. Even my fat tire bike wasn't feeling particularly great this morning. Gonna drop tire pressure for the ride home.

Completed my riding goals for the year. 3500km total and a 100km ride.

It's the most wonderful time of the year!

I see snow in the forecast, and normally wouldn't be happy about that, but I've got a new winter bike arriving and the thought of those fresh powder says on the paths is making me 😁😁😁

Probably not normal.

My tire studs ate a hole through the aluminum rear chain stay of my fat bike. I'm told it's a safety concern and that welding would be difficult and not worth it (requires heat treating it?). Anyone have any experience with something like this?

Also, anyone have any experience with Moose Bicycles?

Thinking about bringing the bike out to BC this weekend on a road trip, but it's supposed to be a bit wet on the drive. Anyone have any suggestions for covering the bike on the rear rack? Do those stretchy covers work or just act like a sail? Or just let it get dirty and then spray it off? #yycbike

#yycbike report: so warm out this morning! Thought I was dressed lightly enough but I was still too warm. Took the gravel bike instead of studded fat bike and was reminded how much I love my gravel bike. So quiet without studs!
Some small snow patches by Telus Spark and the Zoo, maybe a bit of ice.

#yycbike report: cold wind so be sure to cover up that exposed skin. Nose Creek Pathway, the Zoo, and St Patrick's Island are all brushed so either bare or minimal snow cover.

#yycbike report:
Happy 2025! Nice to get those legs working after the break.
2-3cm of choppy snow on the Nose Creek Pathway and by the Zoo but not too bad to ride on. Stephen Ave is mostly cleared already.

Accomplished my riding goal for 2024 with a night ride last night. Didn't think I was going to after my summer surgery so I'm pretty happy.

#yycbike report: heads up that the cut through the pond at St Patrick's Island is flooding over and freezing up.
December 19, 2024 at 11:11 PM
Riding a bike in winter is crazy and nobody will do it.
December 19, 2024 at 4:12 PM
#yycbike report: should be the last cold morning for a bit. Some blown snow on the Nose Creek Pathway by Telus Spark but otherwise bare paths.

Great sunrise today too.

#yycbike report:

Powder day! One of my fav riding conditions is the soft snow that hasn't rutted up yet. It flies up from the tires, softens the stud noise and makes everything a bit more peaceful.

Careful of ice remaining under the snow. Some remaining chunks under the snow on NCP and by the zoo.

What do you do when you have the day off and miss your commute ride? Take a longer ride of course.

Ride report: didn't dress warmly enough.

#yycbike report:

Mostly clear on Nose Creek Pathway, Zoo and Prince's Island. Bit colder than the past few days and some very fine ice crystals blowing in by Deerfoot. Felt like star wars with the headlamp.

#yycbike report (pm):

Update to my previous report. The city (I assume) put sand down on the ice by Telus Spark.
December 11, 2024 at 12:46 AM
Getting real close to my 3000km in 2024 goal. Gonna be close for sure.

#yycbike report:
Lovely ride in through Winston Heights, the Nose Creek Pathway, Zoo and St Patrick's Island.
Some small spots of ice but mostly bare path. The perfect winter riding temperature IMO. Just cold enough to not be slushy.

Enjoy today's ride!

Debating getting a second set of wheels and winter tires for my e-gravel bike so I can take it on days like today. A fat bike with 4.6“ tires isn't needed today and I enjoy riding my gravel bike way more. I still want studs though and a second set of wheels seems simpler than swapping tires.

#yycbike report:

The neighbourhood roads were in good enough shape that I could ride on the road again.
16th Ave Switchback at Deerfoot is icy but manageable.
The Nose Creek Pathway is mostly clear but some slalom work around Spark avoiding the ice. St Patrick's Island to Stephen Ave is bare.

#yycbike report:

Nice easy ride once you get to the paths. Not much ice that I saw on the Nose Creek Path or by the zoo. Mostly bare path.

Enjoy the "warm" weather!

#yycbike report:
Side streets in Winston Heights are messy and i just rode on the sidewalks.
Nose Creek Pathway and the zoo are pretty clear but watch out for some ice from melt, especially by the zoo and under the bridges.
