The Dark Future - Chapter 5 - Almighty, Once

[Tags: Destiny 2, destiny2art, art tab, comics] (P1) Darkness covers the first half of the page, but the dim light of the ambient reveals Eris Morn walking upstairs inside the Pyramid, towards the veiled statue. ERIS (V.O.): “Understand, Guardian. This power we wield is not a gift from a benevolent overseer.” (P2) Eris extends her hand, and the Darkness gifts her with its artifact. ERIS (V.O.): “It is a tool, stolen from an enemy. One that is all too tempting to abuse.” (P3) Canon Timeline, the focus is on Eris Morn, sat by the bonfire as she speaks to POV. Behind her, the Drifter stands casually and Elsie stays afar, watching the Ziggurat. ERIS: “I know this well. Before the Stranger came to offer her guidance, I despaired of my entanglement with the Darkness.” (P4) Close-up on Eris’ Hive Eyes, glowing in melancholy as she concludes her thoughts. ERIS: “I shudder to think how easily I could’ve slipped down the path to destruction.” (P5) Back to the Dark Future, a close-up on Ana Bray's eyes, also looking melancholic. ERIS (V.O.): “How anyone could.” (P6) Establishing shot of the once known as Almighty, now serving as home for the old Commander. ZAVALA (O.S.): “Do you remember this, Warmind? Our great success… And our final victory. There are files in there I’ve been trying to decrypt for years. Maybe you’ll have better luck.” (P7) Inside the wreckage, Warmind Rasputin works on decrypting the files. Behind him, Ana, Elsie and Zavala are around a bonfire. ANA: “I can’t imagine Eris…”; ZAVALA: “Eris wasn’t special. She was corrupted as easily as the rest.” (P8) Commander ZAVALA uses his crutch to control the fire while preparing a kettle for that night, his face is emotionless as he speaks. Behind him, Rasputin works on the glitching consoles. ZAVALA: “She came to me after finding an artifact inside a Pyramid on the Moon and deceived us all. The Bombardment was her masterstroke…” (P9) ZAVALA (O.S.): “…proving that the Darkness destroys all it touches.” Wrapped in Rasputin's cloak, Ana glances at Elsie with a hopeful look, but Elsie's eyes are closed while listening. (P10) Ana turns back to Zavala. ANA: “What happened that day? It’s been impossible to find accurate recounts.”; ZAVALA: “We were outnumbered.” (P11) Flashback of the Bombardment, Zavala is falling, his armor in scraps and his torn leg gushing blood. His Ghost Targe gushes Light out, and behind him, a glance of Eris — as Hive — controls his fate. ZAVALA (V.O.): “When the Witch Queen found me, she called me ‘the nonbeliever’ as she tore my leg from its joint and pulled the Light from my Ghost, discarding me like trash.” And in front, the silhouette of Ikora Rey dissolves in air, only her upper half visible. ZAVALA (V.O.): “Ikora had it worse.” (P12) Listening to Zavala’s memory, Ana’s eyes are filled with tears, but she listens to all of it attentively, and Elsie observes her sister. (P13) Elsie watches Ana with sadness. The urge to console her burns in her stomach. ZAVALA (O.S.): “I looked up to the Traveler, hoping it would be our salvation from this atrocity.” (P14) A sight of Elsie’s memory, when the oldest girl hugs and comforts her crying sister, petting her hair gently. YOUNG ELSIE: “It’s okay. I’ll help.” (P15) Elsie grips her own arms, repressing that memory. (P16) And she turns her face away from Ana, denying her urge to console her sister. ZAVALA (O.S.): “But instead…” (P17) Another flashback, a large landscape panel of a defeated Zavala in the debris of the Tower, watching the Traveler’s departure from Earth. His leg is still gushing blood and his Ghost is broken next to him. ZAVALA (V.O.): “It just… left. Abandoned us when we needed it most.”

"Do you ever tire of the work?" asks Eva. "Can't say that I do, memory's not so great. Every gun feels like a new one." says Banshee in answer. (P2) While they chat, Banshee does notice the duo walking by, and his eyes widen. Eva continues though. "It's just that I see Guardians deliver parts to you all the time," (P3/P4) Eva's words get muffled as Banshee's exo eyes flicker. "It's just that I see Guardians deliver parts to you all the time, and you seem to construct the same gun for them repeatedly. Are you not satisfied—" (P5) Banshee falters, leaning on the counter as his body trembles, and Eva immediately holds him, worried. "Banshee? What's wrong?" (P6) As he returns to normal, Banshee manages to answer Eva. One word, but the reader can't hear it. (P7) A faint old memory comes to mind, and it's possible to distinguish Banshee's yellow hand hugging another exo. (P8) The POV changes, and Elsie Bray glances back to the gunsmith she and the Guardian just crossed paths with. (P9) Her hand clasps the Guardian's, slightly trembling, (P10) and she turns her face away, repressing the memory from earlier, (P11) but Elsie's eyes widen up when she hears his call. "Elsie...?" (P12) Elsie turns back, finding Banshee walking to them with Eva's help. (P13/P14) In silence, they observe each other, both hesitant. (P15) Another old memory, and Banshee recalls the last time he saw his 'granddaughter', "And you... you deserve to be free from that person." (P16) That memory makes him waver. He wasn't supposed to see her again. They both knew it. (P17/P18) But Eva squeezes Banshee's arm, nodding in support to him. (P19/P20) And at the same time, the Guardian does the same to Elsie, squeezing her hand. (P21/P22) Being watched by Eva and the Guardian's supporting smiles, Banshee and Elsie run to each other, (P23) and after ages and forgotten memories of their last time together, grandfather and granddaughter meet again with a tight hug. ((Happy Solstice :D))
