i think to understand the meaning of the birthright citizenship clause to the framers of the 14th amendment, you have to understand significance of dred scott to the civil war republican party. dred scott wasn't just a bad ruling, it was understood as a rejection of the declaration itself.

Everyone has that friend who thinks you love Nerds Gummy Clusters and keeps buying them for you. Which is very sweet but really you’re not that into them. But every time she buys them you have to eat them to make her happy, reinforcing her misconception. You’re in too deep to tell her the truth now.
