The U.K. and Canada moving towards the EU has to be the way forward
I had an excellent call with President von der Leyen about the road ahead for Canada-E.U. trade.

Canada and Europe are strong, reliable partners. In a shifting global economy, that matters more than ever. We’re ready to secure new transatlantic business opportunities together.

An interesting article on the game playing behind the scenes by Putin that demonstrate he clearly intends to escalate his interference in the Baltic states. We must not be complacent.
A piece I've been meaning to write for a while!

The 25 December attack on Estlink 2 should not have come as a surprise, given that the Baltics are shedding one of the last vestiges of Soviet occupation: power grid links to Western Russia, Belarus and Kalinigrad.

The real reason Russia wants to leave the Baltics in the dark
Some say Moscow is trying to show the Baltics are unprepared for the transition off the Soviet-era grid.

It’s interesting how some sections of the media would like us to believe otherwise. It’s also interesting that I suspect most of us would instinctively say that crime was worse. The late Hans Rosling tells a similar story in the book Factfulness. The truth is not always what we expect it to be…
The Crime Survey for England & Wales says incidents fell sharply from 1995 to 2024. ONS data shows crime in England & Wales is now at its lowest level on record. Burglary is 70% lower than in 2002-3, when current figures began. Domestic violence and car crime have dropped sharply since the 90s.

Interesting move by Zelenskyy, fill the influence void, help stabilise a regime and stick a finger in Putin’s eye all in one go. 👏

This substack from the fearless Carole Cadwalladr is very worrying. Why has the Observer newspaper with over two centuries of historic journalism behind it been given to a shadowy company and its even shadier backers? it’s a very worrying read…

This is a long but fascinating thread that caught my eye this morning and thought I would share. I absolutely love the attention to detail is breathtaking, and I love the complex politics incorporated into the painting. Enjoy…
I don't see many long threads on here, but I'll try one - it's about Holbein's Ambassadors, his 1533 masterpiece in the National Gallery. It's often presented as a great mystery, but I think once we understand the circumstances in which it was made, its meaning becomes clearer.

I wonder what the Israelis were targeting with their strikes in Damascus tonight? 🤔
Bolton: It's going to be very interesting to see what the files that may be uncovered in the Syrian government, if the rebels succeed in capturing Damascus, what they show about a number of Americans.

So far this seems like the people of Syria are happy 🤞 I really hope this works out well for them. They deserve peace and they deserve the right to determine their own direction.

The U.K. and frankly every democracy needs to pay attention. Our electoral laws are archaic and need updating urgently. It is not acceptable for a rich person to be able to buy favour, let alone buy the entire government as Musk effective has with the GOP and Trump.

Huge mistake by Biden. Even bigger than him attempting to stand for a second term. In one stroke he has destroyed any moral high ground the Fems may have had, but worse has confirmed for the many frustrated voters “they’re all as bad as each other” *massively* selfish and stupid move.

This is a great example of how the Chinese have seen the economic advantage of moving to a green economy and decoupling themselves from a dependence on Arab/US controlled oil and gas prices. They are making similar massive progress with their renewable technologies.

Yesterday we witnessed a rate event, Parliament actually functioning in a thoughtful and grownup fashion, MPs allowed to debate for what they believed to be best for the country. No childish point scoring, no jeering, just functioning parliamentary debate. If only it could always behave like this.

As a dad whose daughter was spiked in her first term at university I can say this should be mandatory training. It should also be mandatory for hospitals to test if spiking is suspected. This happens far too often and people need to be aware of the symptoms.
