Enjoying learning about birds and birding whilst getting as far away from the city as possible.
Great days birding yesterday at The Outstrays. Six species of geese, endless waders, harriers and short-eared. Topped of with a lovely Scaup pair.

Wasn’t expecting a group of Barnacle geese to turn up on “my local patch” yesterday afternoon but fantastic to see them a 20min walk away. Worth the mud bath any day

*not sure i can really class it as my local patch if i only visit once or twice a week.

Spent yesterday morning at Flamborough South beach yesterday enjoying the flybys and the beautiful barwit mingling with the oystercatcher clan

Spent a little too much time looking for Tundra geese this weekend, to no avail. In between the wild goose chase I paid a visit to Filey Brigg, Figham common and Seamer tip pool.

Contrasting weather at Filey yesterday.
Golden and Ringed plover, Dunlin, Purple Sand amongst those on the rocks and common scoters, GN and RN divers and mallards amongst the seafarers. Oh and a legless Herring gull

New Year’s Day birding means no buses running and a reliance on Northern Rail. 🤞
Wishing everybody a good start to the year

2025 UK total was 211, 2 up on the previous year.
Bluethroat would have to be my best self find of the year.
Looking forward to another year and whatever it may turn up.

Third time lucky with the Eastern Black redstart.
After two days in the Scarborough rain the sun shone and the bird showed better than I could have hoped. What a beauty

Scenic but soggy morning in Scarborough.
Where else would you rather be than a wet cemetery looking for birds (and not doing it very well).

Post work train to Scarborough and a visit to St Mary’s church wasn’t so productive. No eastern black redstart for me today but such a wonderful bird should surely warrant a return trip.

Final trip of the year to Spurn turned up a few little crackers.
Shore larks being one of the first birds of the day was definitely a good sign

Sat on the last Spurn bus of the year. Hoping for a good days birding to tide me over until next spring/summer, when hopefully they start up again 🤞🏻

Belated pics of an enjoyable (but tiring) days birding at Spurn and Welwick saltmarsh. Finally came across some glossy ibis. I was starting to think I might be the only birder who'd not seen any of the influx

CO2 emissions rose by a record amount in 2024. Terrible news. Warming is already affecting birdlife on the planet negatively & the damage is accelerating.

To slow it we can stop flying, drive less, eat plant-based & consume less.
Spread the word, be an example, keep talking & vote Green

Took the trains down to Oakham yesterday to see the Baird's Sandpiper at Rutland water. Met some nice fellow birder and had a cracking brownie at the cafe. Good day off.

Showing my appreciation for the cracking little Red-necked Phalarope that has been kind enough to hang around until the weekend bus to Spurn. Fantastic bird.

An enjoyable days birding along the East coast. The walk from Bempton to Flamborough brought a number of Pied Fly's, Wheatear & Whinchat with a variety of hungry warblers. Nicely topped off with a smattering of Swifts overhead.

@scarpermac.bsky.social Hope you're well Mac & enjoying the weekend.
I'm guessing you've visited Flam Seawatch Festival before?

I'm currently scopeless but would love to go. Just wondering if it'd still be a worthwhile trip for me as I'm clueless about Seawatching.

Maybe a little bit of a niche subject but...
Any recommendations on audiobooks on birding, bird related matter?
Sometimes work and/or travel offer the perfect opportunity for listening.
