The 'goose-fest' in the #LDV continues with up to 700 White-fronted Geese recorded passing through the site on Sunday (inc. 300 dropping into Wheldrake Ings whilst c400 continued north) - all tracked by local birders over York before u-turning south again @yorkbirding.bsky.social

On #NationalNestBoxWeek it was also timely to hear about a Barn Owl (picked up wet/water-logged by a farmer in Wressle) that was kindly dried out overnight and successfully released the following morning, as it now lives to tell (hunt) another day 🦉

It also turned out that this individual was ringed by our team as a nestling (from a brood of four) in a box near Melbourne in 2014 - making it 11/half years old. This is the oldest bird we’ve recorded from our study around the #LDV (from the 1,349 ringed here since 1989)🦉 @yorkbirding.bsky.social

400 flew north through the @ldvnnr.bsky.social & were seen over Fulford & Acomb, while another 300 dropped onto Wheldrake Ings

Reading this article from Josh Jones has me thinking a recent hybrid in the ldv associating with Barnacles is a "North Holland Goose", a hybrid between cackling goose and barnacle goose.
