Stephen, just wanted to say thank you for your excellent views on this issue over the last few days. Probably some of the best counter narrative out there.

Staggering gulf between reality and public opinion. Once again, so important for politicians to provide leadership in this area and not just react to public opinion - which results in bad policy. Depoliticise.
We asked respondents to estimate the proportion of UK immigration in each of these categories [By giving them 100 points to split between 4 categories]

Asylum: estimate 37% (actual: 7%)
Family: estimate 17% (actual 6%)

Work: estimate 26% (actual 40%)
Study: estimate 19% (actual 38%)

Depoliticisation of immigration is so important. As @colinyeo.bsky.social says, focus on outcomes.
Some thoughts from earlier this summer on longer-term reforms I think are needed at the Home Office.

1. Focus — really focus — on outcomes: controlling entry then either removal or integration. Stop doing stuff that gets in the way of these outcomes.

On a slightly different note, I’ve always wondered why skilled migration / work permit cannot be a devolved subject.

Oh that I agree. Running red lights is a real shocker, and cycling on pavements. Though I really do miss Lime bikes having moved from Hackney to Walthamstow.

At All Points East Lime were forcing everyone - via the app - to park in a specifically allotted area. Councils can provide car park spaces to Lime. They’re revolutionary.

Thank you for this on FT. I’ve moved here because of it! (Also recently moved to E17!).
