I've always been very curious about etymology and linguistics, and this is such an interesting article about how onomatopoeia used for animal sounds varies across cultures. Helpful for PB authors to think about the universality of sounds!

How do animals sound across languages?

Just a gentle reminder that you can attend
@scbwi.bsky.social events from other regions outside of your own 🌏 I recently attended SCBWI Southern Breezes' webinar "Put It In Writing: What Authors Need to Know about Publishing Contracts" with Christyne Morrell which was SUCH a helpful legal primer!

An ode to endpapers, celebrating their sophistication, creativity, and whimsy 🧡 They can tell us so much about the tone and theme of the picture book, and it's easily one of my favorite parts of the PB reading experience!

A fascinating read about Japan's influence on picture book craft and making, and how Japan's earliest illustrated storybooks actually predated the West's.

Just had a great chat with @juliefhedlund.bsky.social as the lucky bidder on her KidLit for LA Auction AMA session! Loved talking about narrative structures for diverse stories and how to balance authenticity vs. marketability. You're a legend, Julie 🤩 and thanks for your time! 💙

“It all comes down, I think, to this: a children’s book is not a luxury good. It is fundamental to our culture, to the grown-ups we become, to the society we build. If, as an adult, you become lost, children’s books stand waiting, with their distilled vision of that which can never be lost.” ❤️
Wonderful article by Katherine Rundell about the joy and power of children’s books and about why we must do everything possible to encourage children to read for pleasure. Libraries and librarians are vital! #reading www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

Starter packs are genius, but I was surprised there wasn't a list of them for people to find.

So I built it:
blueskydirectory.com/starter-pack...

The website monitors the packs being shared and adds the ones it finds to the database.

Missed your stater pack? Message me and I'll get it added.
