And yes there is a very hilarious underlying irony about Murakami’s collaboration here, as he’s an artist famously known for criticizing japans embracement of brightly colored mascots by utilizing them himself in a very Andy Warhol fashion.
But it wasn’t until I stumbled onto “Superflat Monogram” that I felt like I encountered the anime world and my mom’s world of ogling LV fashion collide and I felt like oh. Anime isn’t just this little thing…. It can reach people beyond just me and Saturday mornings on abc family.

Can’t speak to the US screenings, but it was funny seeing Jonathan Clements question the audience as to what brought them to the Edinburgh screening as he was kinda baffled why Angels Egg sold out a sizeable theatre when stuff that’s not even out in Japan yet hadn’t.

Just another thing cause I think about it so much. As a kid when it came to English publications, I was always wired into the tiny areas at barnes n nobles where I could read sailor moon, card captors and tokyo mew mew, and eventually fruits basket. Digimons manga was actually really hard to find!!!

Wew that became a long thread but in writing I remembered the older man who told us that Star Blazers is how him & his wife met and got married & I want to lay on the ground and cry. America’s anime culture is wonderful and I wouldn’t have gotten to hear that if I wasn’t running around as Harlock.

Lrp tbh I’d argue that anime itself stopped being about anime fans for fans across the 2010s with the last bastion of it being isekai. Isekai allows for more wink wink nudge jokes, dragon quest jokes being most of them is an example- but anime itself is hinged on adaptions and successful

It's extremely depressing that anime went from a more obscure medium to front and center mainstream during my lifetime, but this translated to the medium transitioning from "for fans by fans" to pure exploitative capitalism with us as the captive audience

Something I realize due to the age, and it shoots my heart bad over how sweet this is, is that a lot of Romeo’s blue skies items seem to be things teachers can use in their classrooms, hence the emphasis of the boys reading and also grading materials!!!!

In more recent portrayals, to allow Rascal and Sterling to fit better within world masterpiece anime calendars and etc, they alter his appearance to look like the other boys but it bothers me a tad when it gets too modernized. Who is that. That’s practically Alfredo.

Explained this earlier this week in a chat but I think the reason Sterling North has eyes drawn like this, is to emulate how irl blonde American kids have puffy under eyelids that they eventually grow out of. The actor for Disney’s Rascal (1969) film also exemplifies this appearance!

Lot of older anime make me feel like I’m listening to a stranger at a bar tell a whole story to whoever wants to listen, where being in the storytellers world is so sincere and enjoyable and it’s okay when things don’t fall into place because things don’t really do irl either.
