20yo DOGE tech bros entered NSF and cut funding to my ACTIVE grant. I am 3 YEARS into a 5 year grant, that was awarded to me by NSF. I have teams of science teachers doing climate justice units in their classrooms, grad students collecting data. Effective immediately. breach of contract at a minimum

One thing that needs calls to Congress right now: NSF construction budget cuts.

NSF just pulled funding for building a cutting-edge airborne radar system to study hurricanes and other severe weather (see below post).

Dear Colleagues, I am writing to share the difficult news that we were informed on Friday afternoon that NSF has suspended their support for the Airborne Phased Array Radar (APAR) through the Mid-Scale Research Infrastructure-2 program. The original $91.8 million grant was awarded to NSF NCAR in May of 2023. We are now working with NSF on a timeline and next steps for closing the project down, and we are in the process of determining what this will mean for staff working on APAR. In the meantime, we are meeting directly with those who are being impacted to answer their questions as best we can and provide support. While there are many questions we cannot yet answer, I felt it was important to let you all know of this NSF decision as soon as possible. As we gather more information and have a clearer picture of the future, I will share more details with you. However, I would like to briefly touch on a few important points. First, I believe that the decision to cancel funding for APAR is based on a number of factors. These include some unanticipated cost and schedule challenges related to the project's complexity as well as a difficult federal budget outlook for science in general and science infrastructure in particular. However, I do not believe that this decision to cut funding is a reflection of APAR’s scientific value. APAR’s potential to be a transformative tool for observing hurricanes and other severe weather remains. This is exactly the type of next-generation observational tool that our organization should be developing and deploying for community use in order to push science forward and respond to urgent societal needs. I also want to take this opportunity to recognize and thank the APAR team. They have been working incredibly hard to make this project successful. When you set out to do something that has never been done before, there are nearly always challenges that are incredibly difficult to anticipate. Overcoming these obstacles can be hard, but taking on this kind of high-risk, fundamental research is at the heart of our mission and it is critical that we don’t shy away from these projects, as difficult as they are. I have been impressed at every turn with the APAR team’s dedication and creativity in the face of these challenges, and I want to make clear that the inability to move forward with APAR is not related to the quality of their work. I am also grateful to our many partners and subcontractors on this project, whose work on this project has been invaluable. Finally, I want to affirm NSF NCAR’s commitment to APAR. While this is a significant setback, and the way forward is not certain, we know from engaging with our research community that this instrument is needed. With that in mind, we plan to explore every possible path forward in the near and long term to continue to make progress.
