Devastating. Please help if you can. ❤️‍🩹
On January 24th, my parents home burned down. They and my disabled brother escaped with only minor burns but they lost everything they've ever had.

I'm running a GoFundMe to help them recover and rebuild. I would be deeply grateful for any donations but also for any shares!

And surely there must be a German word for the frustration when you sit at your computer, constantly refreshing the screen, set a timer, and then STILL get timed out for the HAD submission call.

When you get a rejection for a story… six weeks after it’s been published somewhere else. 🤔
I feel like there should be a German word for this.

Also thrilled to make it onto this longlist (on my third try… it’s a tough ‘un.) Congrats & commiserations to all, but mostly congrats, because you are out there writing. Resisting despair and hate and ugliness and making art in spite of everything. 👏🏻💙✨
Thrilled to see my story on this longlist! Congratulations to everyone on it and hugs to those who missed out this time.❤️
DRUM ROLL!!!! 🥁🥁🥁

It gives me great pleasure to announce the SPARKLING longlist for the Welkin Writing Prize 2026.

Congratulations to all the writers on this list. And commiserations to everyone else. The standard was incredibly high:

Thank you to Boudin for nominating “Bent Twigs” and to New Flash Fiction Review for nominating “A Few Words About the Weather,” and thanks to the Best Micro team! 🥳

Looks like I did my end-of-year roundup too early, because I got one more (really disappointing) rejection for a project I’ve been working on for a long time, and one unexpected nomination for Best American Short Stories (!) from the fabulous Flash the Court. Coming into 2026 like …
