Environmental journalist Trina Moyles recalls the upwelling of wonder she felt when she first touched a bear cub as a child. Years later, face-to-face with a much bigger bear in the Alberta bush, that wonder turned into a primal battle over space: https://ow.ly/NNhY50XYhyP

For the first time since I started volunteering at my local floral conservatory, I’ve brought a plant home to try and rehabilitate. I have a soft spot for cyclamens and this one has a healthy tuber so fingers crossed.

Thank you for that wonderful lecture you just delivered to my MFA program, @alexanderchee.bsky.social. How to be a writer in this world? What to make, how to make.

Every time I update my computer or phone seems like a trick for Apple to force AI on me. All these “smart” things I then have to spend forever figuring out how to deactivate. Let me live!

Listening to the King’s MFA fiction cohort read from their works in progress is the perfect antidote to lingering pain from my dentist appointment earlier in the day. Storytelling rocks!

Starred reviews for Black Bear in @readbookpage.bsky.social and @publisherswkly.bsky.social. Writer Alice Cary says, “Black Bear is reminiscent of the very best nature writing, belonging on the shelf with Raising Hare, H Is for Hawk and Late Migrations.”

What a surreal week! Thank you for reading.

A small but concrete task for today:

Sameer Project told us on 12/25 that it costs $38 for 1 blanket, which can help keep a family that is in their 3rd winter in genocide (😢) warm.

Can anyone join us today in donating the cost of one blanket to Sameer? Can you get 1 other person to join you?

Every Saturday morning I get to spend an hour or so at the Regina Floral Conservatory taking care of plants etc. when it isn’t flowering, which is a lot of the time, one might wonder why this plant is called bird of paradise. But it’s one of my favourites here. As kids we called it the crane plant.

"Search African Futurism authors" just popped up at the top of my Instagram app.

I took the time to coin and define africanfuturism yet people can't spell it. The spelling of the term is PART of the definition! Now it's been gotten wrong so often that AI have picked that up. Mscheeew, exhausting.
