Very, very good piece. "London is perhaps the only place in England where you can tell people where you’re from, and instantly they feel empowered to inform you what a terrible place it is." ✅

Indie director Barbara Marques has been kidnapped by ICE. She is legally married to a U.S. citizen & was at a green card mtg when she was abducted and prevented from seeing her lawyer. Her husband Tucker May does not know where she is. Please spread the word so he can find her /1

For many couples and families summer is the time when they can celebrate their love together.
However, for the thousands separated by the spouse visa rules, it is harder still because this racist and classist policy never takes a break or never allow people to take a break from it

References the mad MIR Tory proposal from a year or so ago, which the report released today recommends isn't implemented. Let's see what the current government make of the report's recs, and which (if any) they decide to listen to
The proposal for a £38,700 threshold reflects the government thinking of the UK citizen who wants to get married as if they are an employer proposing to give someone a job, saying 'the only thing we really care about is what are the economic pros/cons of letting your spouse come and live here'

Governments and advisers should not use the human rights framework as a shield, but work out the principle.

Public policy on marriage visas should be concerned to avoid exploitation/fake relationships. But should let UK citizens form genuine relationships, not restrict that to higher-rate taxpayers

Exactly
This is the MAC review. Public policy should not make visas to get married primarily about the impact on net migration, because that is to treat people & their relationships instrumentally and inappropriately

Today is a pivotal day for bi-national couples and families: for the first time people on the spouse/partner visa route were listened to by a Committee that wanted to learn what life is really like when you want to live in the UK and were moved by what we read in the report #FamiliesBelongTogether🧵

Attended an excellent pitch doc workshop with @annaruthjordan.bsky.social this week. One unexpected side-effect (unrelated to pitching) is that one of the exercises Anna had us do has led to a key breakthrough in the writing of a current project. Nice!

This is very good. Why DO we lose the art of just hanging out as we get older? (Though to be clear I've never been a huge fan of the 'pop in')
