What's the future for UK #woodlands and #forests? Everyone's talking about #treeplanting, but there is lot to consider: What do we plant? Where? Why? Who pays? How is it managed? In our short films we interview experts to provide insights and ideas.

We visited Torry Hill Chestnut Fencing - a 5th gen family business in Kent, to film our next episode on #coppicing. By buying and expanding the business they helped to keep coppicing alive in the region after the pulp market collapsed, showing the value of #traditionalskills

The 3 stages of #ancientwoodlandrestoration are to halt further decline, transform back to #nativewoodland and to maximise #ecological integrity. Mick Bracken (Woodland Trust) explains in all these stages it is #light that is the most important factor.

🌲What is #ancientwoodland? Land that has been continuously wooded for at least 400 years, during the mid 20th century, nearly half of them were felled and replanted mostly with fast-growing #timber species. Now these precious #Ecosystems are small and fragmented and cover less than 3% of UK land. 🌳

The Woodland Trust are championing #ancientwoodlandrestoration too! Join their campaign below...
They say "Unless our government acts decisively, we risk losing these #preciousecosystems forever. Urge your minister to rescue our damaged ancient woods now."

#Ancientwoodlands are vital for biodiversity but many have become #Ghostwoods "once thriving ancient woodlands felled in the 20th century and now smothered by monoculture plantations." @wildcard.land's new Ghost Wood campaign is calling on @forestryengland.bsky.social to restore these lost habitats.
