The world feels rough right now

So please enjoy this shrimp, filmed off Cozumel, Mexico. It may be a larval reef shrimp, but we don’t know what species or how long it lives or what it eats. The world is still full of wonder and beauty and mystery.

If we can start 2026 with a high profile excommunication by the American Pope™️ I might just allow myself a tiny amount of beatitude
Editorial in the National Catholic Reporter: "The vice president's comments justifying the death of Renee Good are a moral stain on the collective witness of our Catholic faith. His repeated attempts to blame Good for her own death are fundamentally incompatible with the Gospel."
Catholic Vice President Vance takes to social media to justify killing of Renee Good
After the tragic shooting of Renee Good at the hands of ICE, the Catholic vice president of the United States took to social media to justify the killing.

Now this might be on me, but I feel like a doctor should maybe mention in advance that the type of biopsy they're going to do is the kind that's gonna leave a cool scar

I feel things really started going sideways ever since we stopped having proper bacchanal rites. I bet if a few dozen baddies got the maenads back together it could probably solve a whole lot of our current leadership problems.

So it's appropriate to arrest a world leader if you consider them criminal? You can just go get them? Just asking questions here.

Fuck, RIP to one of the best
You know in movies where they kinda wipe their hand gently over the face of a dead guy and it closes their eyes. It would be a good gag if they did that on a guy with glasses. Either his eyes close or the glasses turn into sunglasses.

Most of the replies are understandably historical and/or physical in nature, but our collection challenges are hyper modern; like 8TB of genomics data or 4TB of astrocyte imaging that can't be easily ingested or shared for various reasons!

(sorry to keep going but it's my job!)
Archivists/librarians please share the coolest thing in your collections that will never be digitized.
I live in the heart of California gold country. One of the richest mines ever in CA is nearby. Opened circa 1860 closed 1942. A local foundation has preserved the records on site. I know not a stitch has been digitized and am confident no more than 2 pro historians have ever been in there.

We have an old photo documenting experiment progress (growing plants in regolith - cool stuff!) from the 70s, but it has a clearly visible fingerprint on the original film - and since we can't verify it's not a federal employee's fingerprint, it's considered sensitive material

I've seen rental listings that use AI to stage homes, but this is the first time I've seen a full on AI slop home listing. Let's take a tour, shall we?
