idk if it's always been like this, but it seems like a lot of political debate these days is "this is a catastrophe/emergency" vs "this isn't a problem/isn't real" -- climate, crime, covid, lots of issues
The problem in the US is that more often than not the way violence and disorder are addressed are too heavy-handed and over-reliant on certain forms of policing that are inherently biased, however on here the answer is "there is no disorder and it is fine, actually"

Think that was Adam Smith, but they might have both written it.

Smith's point was actually that you'd be more upset by losing your finger than by news that everyone in China died, but he does note that no one would therefore make that trade if it were on offer.
Turns out Hume's thought experiment about the man who prefers the destruction of the whole world to a cut on his finger wasn't a thought experiment at all, but a real guy
