Welcome! This is my account completely devoted to weather. Most of the posts will be about tropical cyclones but I'll occasionally post about regional weather, mainly focusing on the #RVA area and mid-Atlantic but sometimes on other major weather events.

A winter weather advisory has been issued for most of the #RVA area through 8pm. An unexpectedly heavy burst of snow is moving through and could result in 1-3" of snow, particularly north and west of the city. This snow is accumulating FAST so travel could be tricky. #vawx

There is a small pocket of heavy snow showers headed for the #rva area, but the air mass over us is bone dry. I don't think much of this will actually get here or reach the ground if it does. #vawx

This weekend is going to be kind of messy. A strong cold front moves through later today and brings a chance of snow showers. Although the snow could be heavy at times, only a dusting to less than an inch is likely. #rva #vawx 1/

Our bomb cyclone friend moving out to sea today. Temperatures will get above freezing tomorrow, but it may take until Wednesday for the "snowcrete" on neighborhood streets to completely melt away because anything that melts during the day will refreeze at night. #rva #vawx

Heavier snow is creeping toward Colonial Heights and Petersburg. This snow is likely reaching the ground and could cause issues as the winds pick up during the next few hours.

Closer to #rva, scatterered flurries. Most of what the radar shows isn't reaching the ground. #vawx

Jennette's Pier in Nags Head, NC is reporting sustained winds of 36 kts (41 mph). There is a hurricane force wind warning in effect for the offshore waters there and sustained winds of 70 kts (80 mph) are forecast late tonight. #ncwx

My final-est call for this weekend's snow. Yeah, winter weather forecasting is hard. The dry air will win the day and preclude any snow for the area.

However, it will be VERY cold and VERY windy. Widespread power outages are possible. #rva #vawx

It is absolutely insane watching this potential storm evaporate with each run of the mesoscale models. I have no idea what is going on with them - they aren't registering snow accumulations in places where it's snowing RIGHT NOW. The models are just junk. #vawx #rva

The winter storm watch for the #RVA area has been replaced with a winter weather advisory. Most parts of the area will see 1-3" of snow, but S and E (Colonial Heights, etc) could see higher amounts.

Petersburg and Hopewell are now under the winter storm warning. #vawx

My final(ish) forecast for this weekend's storm. Confidence is low for everywhere except Hampton Roads and SW VA. The snow forecast is lower in the #RVA area, but high winds are possible and - thanks to our recent ice storm - widespread power outages are possible. See alt text for discussion. #vawx
This is my final...ish forecast for this weekend's snowstorm. Many of the models have greatly suppressed snowfall throughout much of central and northern Virginia, while ramping it up near the Atlantic coast. There are many issues regarding phasing and dry slotting that make this forecast a nightmare (which is why I say final...ish) - most of the model guidance ranges anywhere from 0 inches to 8 inches of snow in Richmond. Since much of the guidance shows lower snowfall totals near Richmond, amounts have been reduced there. Confidence remains quite low, however. Southwestern Virginia and Hampton Roads will be a different story. Heavy snow is likely in Blacksburg, Galax, and Bristol. The heaviest snow will likely occur in South Hampton Roads along the coast - the center of the low pressure system will be relatively near the coast, and it will be rapidly intensifying. This means sustained winds of 30 to 40 mph and gusts as high as 50 mph, and blizzard conditions are possible in portions of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. This is a particularly dangerous situation for those areas, and travel will be nearly impossible, especially on Saturday into Sunday. Although snow totals further inland have been reduced, wind will be a serious issue along and east of I-95. In areas where blizzard conditions are not expected, you are still looking at sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph with higher gusts. Our recent ice storm has done a number on trees and infrastructure, and although these winds are not particularly high, there will be a significant power outage threat in much of the region.

A winter storm warning is now in effect for the VA counties along the NC state line, as well as Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore. I expect the watch for RVA to be dropped.

Blizzard conditions are possible along the Atlantic coast, as sustained winds of up to 50 mph are possible. #rva #vawx

An extreme cold watch is in effect for the #RVA area from Saturday night through Sunday morning. This is a rare event for the region, and it is issued when cold temperatures and high winds could produce dangerously cold wind chills, in this case -5 to -10°F. #vawx

Rumors of this weekend's storm's demise may have been greatly exaggerated. The 12Z ECMWF run is much snowier for much of Virginia and is actually not too far off from my first call map. #rva #vawx
