he was brilliant in yojimbo, harakiri, high and low, and ran. had a rich, staggering presence in japanese cinema that leveled with toshiro mifune and takashi shimura. his long life combined with his remarkable filmography is unmatched. if he's left out of next year's oscars memoriam i'll be fuming.
