It’s important to note that while I have a lot of criticism of DQ7R, I still bought it and have played 30 hours since Thursday, something I will absolutely not be doing with Yakuza Kiwami 3 because it looks like complete dog shit

Not to dunk on this article specifically but the idea that we need to dumb down games for modern kids just honestly does not make sense to me. JRPGs are already one of the simplest genres to wrap your head around, and kids play much more complex things! They play Roblox and Fortnite!
Some thoughts on Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined. I think it’s a neat approach for a remake to look at the original, read it as a kid’s game, and ask what it can do visually and mechanically to reinforce that. www.polygon.com/dragon-quest...

Kinda shocked how quickly I got to Alltrades Abbey in DQ7R. It felt like a giant moment in the 3DS version to play the length of like a full JRPG (30 hours) and then suddenly unlock a job system. When it happens in half that time it’s like, ah, neat, expected mechanical progression.

The degree to which some of these DQ7R story segments are streamlined makes them hit like not at all. The Regenstein scenario removing all of the puzzle solving aspect literally just makes it “talk to this guy twice” and then it’s over. Like why did you do that
